This volume is packed with almost everything the average undergraduate student needs to know about the ancient Greek philosophers. I particularly recommend the exposition on Pyrrhonism.

Good volume for understanding the foundations of Western philosophy

For someone to adequately understand Western philosophy it is important to go back to its foundations, and that means the study of Ancient Philosophy. In this classic five-volume anthology Forrest Baird and Walter Kaufmann's first volume is devoted to the philosophy of ancient Greece and Rome. The volume begins with brief selections from the pre-Socratics: Thales, Anaximander, Anaximenes, Pythagoras, Heraclitus, Parmenides, Empedocles, Anaxagoras, Gorgias, and others. Far more space is devoted to Plato and Aristotle. (Plato especially receives a significant amount of space. His work is anthologized over almost 250 pages of text, which means that close to half of this volume is devoted to his writings.) The last part of this volume is devoted to briefer selections from Epicurus, the early Stoics, Epictetus, Leucretius, Marcus Aurelius, Pyrrho, Sextus Empiricus, and Plotinus.
Baird and Kaufmann provide some brief but relatively useful introductions to the various philosophers. If I had a criticism to make of this volume it would be that the editorial introductions are a little bit too brief and do not always give an adequate description of the thought of the various philosophers whose writings are contained in this volume.

Essential reading for any serious student of philosophy. Walter Kaufmann is a true scholar of philosophy and well-known for his translations and analyses of Nietzsche's brilliant corpus of philosophical and literary works.
