Tough but worthwhile read

This is a great book, but about a difficult subject, extreme poverty as existed in London in the late 19th century. There are many paralells with the present. A must-read for anyone interested in social history and change. London is always an engaging writer.

Seems "the poor will always be with us!"

The depressing thing is that the kind of poverty so graphically described by London in this book has not been eradicated but exported to the Third World. If - like me - you're from a country like South Africa, it'll seem like you're reading about your own current reality.

If novelistic brilliance is your thing, this book will surely float your boat, as Jack London is superb in conveying the sheer horror of life for the working class in early 20th century UK. As we now know, 2 world wars, US aid and colonial exploitation succeeded in raising Western standards of living in most of the last few decades - something that neoliberalism has done much to reverse today.

Unlike Engels in his classic "The Conditions of the Working Class," London did not propose a political solution but was convinced that the problem was solvable, since "mismanagement" was seen as the root cause. Naive perhaps, but that was hardly the point. This book has survived because of its literary merit - the immediacy and pathos that London evokes. Read it, you will be the better for it.

The story continues following a small group of soldiers as they attempt to continue day to day in the most brutal and desperate of situations. The hope of rescue or potential victory is sustained only by camaraderie and the determination to survive.


As the German High Command desperately tries to re-establish the initiative and plan a relief effort to the beleaguered city, the army inside Stalingrad is ordered to stand firm on the banks of the freezing Volga River.

The German Air Force, the Luftwaffe, mistakenly commit to supplying the city from the air, failing to realistically consider the distance, roaming Russian fighters, ground to air fire and the extreme temperatures.

As temperatures plummet and ammunition becomes rationed, the food and combustible material begin to run out forcing the desperate defenders to continue fighting in the most miserable and chilling conditions imaginable to man.

With temperatures dropping to between minus 25 and 40 degrees Celsius, survival against a Red Army hell-bent on revenge and the Sixth Army's destruction will continue as the men face a sustained challenge of survival on a day to day basis.

Across the frozen Russian Front from the suburbs of Leningrad in the north to the southern banks of the Black Sea in the Caucasus Mountains, two facts are now emerging.......this merciless war will now not be over by Christmas, and the myth of German military invincibility had been cracked, if not finally shattered on the banks of the Volga.

Having spent thirty years studying World War 2 and in particular, the Russian Front, Bloody Rattenkrieg is based on historical fact. The characters are fictitious, attempting to portray a realistic account of what the battle would have been like for individual soldiers. All units and actions are in accordance with actual events, including propaganda, deployment and individual division engagements.

Bloody Rattenkrieg is the sequel to 'Bloody Iced Bullet', the opening work in the series. Both books are now available in US bookstores, in electronic format and paperback from Kindle across the world.

There is no glory in war.

Real war from a soldiers perspective. These men were not Nazis, just German regulars fighting for survival in a place where no prisoners were taken. Our Russian allies were capable of extreme atrocities, not only against the hated Germans but civilians as well as their own men. A gripping and enlightening read.

Mark E. Bouton is the Robert B. Lawson Green & Gold Professor of Psychology at the University of Vermont. He is a leading researcher in the field of animal learning, cognition, and behavior. For many years, his research has investigated the relationships between context, conditioning, memory, and motivation, with a special emphasis on inhibitory processes like extinction. Some of his scientific writing has focused on the connections between modern learning theory, neuroscience, and issues in cognitive behavioral therapy (e.g., panic disorder, fear and anxiety, relapse after therapy). He has been a Fulbright Scholar, a James McKeen Cattell Scholar, a University Scholar at the University of Vermont, and a Fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences (Stanford), and he is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association, the Association for Psychological Science, and the Society of Experimental Psychologists. He was Editor of the Journal of Experimental Psychology: Animal Behavior Processes, the field's most prestigious journal, from 1998 until 2003. He has taught an up-to-date course in Learning, which is given away in his book, for over three decades.

A pleasant, deep, thorough review of a beautiful science

Bouton's "Learning and Behavior" provides one of the best current introductions to the science of animal learning. This book might feel "hard to digest" at first due to the great amount of literature reviewed in it, as well as because of the many connections the author makes among different findings and theories (in my opinion, these are feats, rather than flaws). Don't desist... keep reading it! The beauty of this journey lies in its many different paths. If you view psychology as a scientific endeavor, you will enjoy the openness of this book to different interpretations, rebuttals, refutations, and alternative accounts. Dense, but somewhat helpful

I used this textbook for my Psychology of Learning course. Didn't find it particularly helpful, due to it being very dense and word-heavy. I felt like the author should have stated theories in more simple terms. However, diagrams and figures were the most helpful; they were fairly easy to understand and were beneficial when used with classroom lectures.

This is yet another fine Adventures in Canadian History bookwritten for children by Pierre Berton. All the books in this seriesare outstanding and captivating not only for young readers but adults alike. This series brings us into an in depth understanding of Canadian History. This volume is memorable for it's tale of the struggles of different people groups as they faced the challenges and joys of opening up the Canadian West, specifically Saskatchewan. The only drawback to this book is we wished it was longer. The stories are fascinating. The historical aspects of this book gave our family a clearer understanding of the people in modern day Saskatchewan. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED READING!

I Hate This Book So Much -- 5+ Stars

It's just after midnight, EST.

I flip on my Kindle to check email real quick before going to bed.

Sitting there on my homescreen is CONTACT, all shiny and glowing.

"Crap", I think. I had completely forgotten that I had preordered it several weeks before. "I'm not going to get any sleep tonight...".

I remember way back in grade-school, I used to stay up into the wee hours of morning on a regular basis, reading book after book after book. It wasn't rare for me to read multiple books a day.

But now I'm a full-time author, and I'm a busy dude.

Every day I've got books to write, publicity events to set up, interviews to schedule, and hundreds of emails to sort through.

I can't afford to stay up late reading.

Damn Johnny Truant and Sean Platt and their dastardly plot to ruin my life by writing such great books.

Because this is, in fact, one of the best books I've read all year.

In fiction writing, there's a common analogy that suspense is when there's a ticking bomb under the table. Action is when the bomb goes off.

And that's the difference between INVASION and CONTACT. In INVASION, there's a time bomb sitting under the table, and everybody's afraid to move and risk the chance of accidentally setting it off. Things are tense and suspenseful.

In CONTACT, the bomb has gone off, the aliens are here, and everything is freakin' awesome.

I don't know how Johnny and Sean pulled it off, but the took one of the most cliche, overdone ideas out there (an alien invasion) and made it totally epic.I mean, this thing makes THE WAR OF THE WORLDS look like garbage. Like, seriously, I would toss all of the works of H.G. Wells into the garbage can to make room on my shelves for INVASION and CONTACT.

I think one of the main reasons that such a cliched plot is actually good is because of the characters.

The Dempsey family (well, MOST of them...) return in this book, and they're just as likeable and hateable and relatable as in the first book. In addition to these top-notch characters, we're also introduced to some brand new characters who are downright awesome.

Seriously, as a writer myself, I envy the ability that Johnny and Sean have to whip up such realistic and unique and complex characters and toss them into a freakin' epic plot...and do it all so insanely fast.

I am now eagerly awaiting COLONIZATION, the third installment in this series, so that Platt and Truant can steal another couple of hours of my life, and bring me within an inch of missing my writing deadlines...

Slower Pace than Book 1 - still can't wait for the next book!

A good followup to Invasion, Contact takes place 3 months later and follows Meyer's family as they try to live without going crazy inside of the bunker, and the crowds of people attracted to Meyer's house because he was abducted there in the hopes that they might be abducted too. (Lots of hippies.) Not is all sunshine and rainbows, though, as some of the crowd have discovered the bunker, and are trying to break in...

I enjoyed the new characters and relationships introduced in this book, and like how nobody is safe from danger.

That said, this book is not quite as "page-turney" as the first book, owing in large part to a lot of the action taking place in a very confined space. There is a bit of travel as a few of the main characters try to find a secret research base in Utah and to travel there from Meyer's bunker without getting killed, but it wasn't just one life-threatening event after another as folks tried to cross the country from NY to CO like the first book.

Meyer himself plays a very small role in this book, although given how the book ends I expect that he will play a much larger role in the third book. While I didn't tear through this one nearly as fast as I did the first book, I am still eagerly awaiting the the next book.

Now I'm just annoyed. I could forgive the writers in volume one for not introducing us to the aliens. But I'm a third through volume two and for all intents and purposes, no aliens. I really wanted to read a good alien invasion book and now it is just getting monotonous. Sorry, have to move on.

Be careful! This book posting is misleading! I thought I purchased the version by Olivia Coolidge. However, the softcover version is NOT by her, but someone else, and it is listed as the same book! Also, when you "look inside" the book.. it's actually Shakespeare's Merchant of Venice! Now I'm stuck with a book I can't use, and I'm not sure how to get the actual book I thought I ordered! It's a big mess.

challenging book

I bought this book for my homeschooled son who is 9 and his younger sister, both very advanced readers and history fans. The book was still a challenge. Wonderful in and of itself, its vocabulary, sentence structure and plot were above their heads. I had to concentrate real hard to follow the plot myself. Finally, I decided to read the book myself and retell it briefly to my children.
If I had to read it all over again I would carefully keep track of the names of Gallic chiefs and who they conspired with and against. So much of the book revolves around it!
Bottom line: great book for older children perhaps, 11 (as recommended above)could be still too young.

Not for middle school

Very difficult reading for the recommended age. I attempted reading it aloud to my eleven year old as our history curriculum suggests, and found it nearly impossible to keep both of us from nodding off. Save this until high school or college, at best, and even then only if you are seriously into the subject.

what good are the words if they are inapplicable

useful guide for goal setting

What I like about the book that it is very concise and the content is organised in a very clear way. After introducing time and energy managment practices the author explaines how to determine your goals and prepare goal sheets. Then she explaines 7 goal-setting areas of life step by step with examples in separate chapters. There are useful tips in this book on how to achieve your goals, so I think it is worth reading it.

Great book!

This book sets out, in the context of a story, an excellent system for running checks on one's own decisions. I recommend it highly to anyone who has ever wondered why they repeatedly have made bad decisions (in the sense of not reflecting their own true values and interests) in the past, or would like to make even better decisions in the future. Through two questions, each having three aspects, the decision maker can reflect on whether they are dealing with what is real or imagined, and whether they are being true to themselves. A very short, easy read, but extremely useful. Highly recommended for everyone, including young people.

Yes or No...

The book of the week was Yes or No by Spencer Johnson. Johnson is the same author of Who Moved My Cheese and The One Minute Manager. He uses a fictitious stories to illustrate a main idea. This particular story dealt with making decisions. Learning how to make decisions is an incredibly important skill to master. It sounds silly to think of deciding as a skill, but some people have it and some people just don't.

The more comfortable you feel making a decision, the more valuable you are to any organization. Most people in the world hate making a decision. Even in a social setting, you'll see a group of people trying to decide where they want to eat... and an hour later they finally made their pick. All the while, every person in that group is hungry and anxious. I think most people have been there and it is not pleasant at all. You may even notice those that are comfortable with making decisions correlate with high paying executive positions. Any organization can see value in someone that doesn't take extraordinary amounts of time to make a decision.

I'm not going to spend a lot of time giving detail about the fictitious part of the book. Unlike Johnson's other books, the story in this one wasn't very good. The decision making map, however, is pretty good. Before I go any further though... I have made it clear that it is valuable to have the ability to make decisions. The next step is to learn how to make good decisions. That is what really separates the pack. The decision making map in the book is directed toward helping you make good decisions. So here it is:

I avoid indecision and half-decisions based on half-truths

I use both halves of a reliable system to consistently make better decisions:

a cool head and a warm heart

I USE MY HEAD
by asking myself a practical question
AND
I CONSULT MY HEART
by asking myself a private question

Then, after I listen to myself and others, I make a better decision and act on it

To use my head, I ask a practical question:

Am I meeting the Real Need, Informing Myself of Options, and Thinking It Through?

YES or NO?

Is it a mere want or a real need? What information do I need?
Have I created options?
If I did 'x' then what would happen. Then what?

To consult my heart, I ask a private question:

Does My Decision Show I Am Honest with Myself, Trust My Intuition, and Deserve Better?

YES or NO?

Am I telling myself the truth? Does this feel right? What would I decide if I was not afraid? What would I do if I deserved better?

If 'Yes' I Proceed ............ If 'No' I Rethink

What Is My Better Decision?

With time and practice the map becomes second nature and you just end up making the right decision without much thought. This is ideal. But to get there you have to practice. Use the decision map here and correlate yourself with all those other high powered executives out there.

The book was pretty good. It doesn't take much time to read, so if you don't like it you didn't waste much of your time. As always, If you have any questions on the book don't hesitate to ask. I would be more than happy to help anyone that wants it.

Practical Advice For Decision Making

As the author of the "One Minute" series of books, Spencer Johnson has maintained his style of short and mostly conversational story telling with "Yes or No" to convey the art of making decisions. Set as a story of a weekend hike with a number of professionals all looking to improve the same abilities, the main character uncovers a very clear and sensible approach for making any decision.

The book is short enough to be read in an hour. The content and dialog is somewhat dry and hokey at times. Yet inside the book contains several nuggets that compensate for any of the negative aspects of its presentation. The ideas are thought provoking, logical, and they work. If you struggle with some of the choices in your life or even find that you are not getting the results you'd prefer from some of your major decisions, this short book is well worth the effort.
