Not enough information

Just like the review before; my professor requires that we do all the exercises but the book does not provide enough information to complete them. One question requires us to implement a Java Servlet. We are given the required web.xml code. We are given the required java code. There is NOTHING about where to place the web.xml, what to write in my HTML file to run the servlet, how to compile Java, or anything about the javax api that I had find out about online that are required to run all this non-sense. I have read this book up to Chapter 5 and have no idea what I am doing. I have spent hours online going through rude forum posts and broken links after broken link. I HATE this book.

About the Author

Born in Frankfurt-am-Main, Erich Fromm (1900-1980) studied sociology and psychoanalysis. In 1933, he emigrated as a member of the Frankfurt School of social thinkers to the United States, moved to Mexico in 1950, and spent his twilight years between 1974 and 1980 in Switzerland. His books Fear of Freedom (1941) and The Art of Loving (1956) made him famous. Other well-known books are Marx's Concept of Man, Beyond the Chains of Illusion, and The Essential Fromm.

Well... to be, says Fromm.

In response to the materialism of our century and our propensity to reification, psychoanalyst Erich Fromm proposes a mode of living that he argues is the way out of our psychospiritual conundrum.

Within the pages of this book, one of the last before his demise, the author of the bestseller _ The Art of Loving_ describes the two modes possible--that of having and being. 20th century culture he says has developed into employing and relying on the having mode--of appropriating things and even humans for oneself. Even love has been turned into an object, when in fact no such thing exists. Only the act of loving is possible.

In contradistinction to having is being. It is a mode of active participation in life. While the misnomer 'falling in love' is touted by the world as the norm, Fromm argues that true loving is an effortful activity. While accumulating knowledge is the way of having, the being mode of knowing is a process of understanding.

Although written nearly three decades ago, Fromm's worldview continues to be the ideal. This work of his is a timeless caveat against the dehumanization of society.

Fromm is one of the classics - along with Freud, Jung, Adler. He studied psychology, philosophy and sociology, received his PhD at the age of 22, became interested in Zen Buddhism at the age of 26. One of the true geniuses.

This book was written in 1976. Fromm debates that there are two possible modes of living: one of having and of being. He points out the differences between the two and of a person living in the having mode to the one living in the being mode. He shows the differences in behavior and attitude between the two in many life's areas and experiences: studying, remembering, talking, reading, faith, love, handling authority. The less you are oriented on having, the more you are being.

A Powerful Spiritual Book

I have already read twice this book in the past three years and consider re-reading it again soon. It has become part of me; everyday I remember key sentences from the book which help me make sense of my own life, attitudes, and ideas. Two notions (a) the "being" way of life as opposed to "having", and (b) "matter is in constant flux" help me let go, relieving me of my attachment to things material. Paradoxically, they also give me the courage to experience life in a more proactive way, and to accept and appreciate life as it is without trying to force events. It's a truly spiritual and healing book.

His work covered not only the contemporary substance of the law but also its moral, ethical and political context, the pressures upon its development and its potential for further positive, and other, development. This edited collection presents a very significant part of Professor Colonel Draper s work, including many pieces which are no longer readily accessible or have never before been published, with modern commentary referring to developments which have occurred since his death. The late Professor Colonel s work is an important scholarly contribution to the subject and also retains a very great degree of modern relevance, including comment upon such issues as war crimes and appropriate responses to them. '"This important work has two main aims, in respect of both of which it is oustandingly successful. Its first aim is to pay a highly deserved tribute to the memory of Professor Colonel G.I.A.D. Draper, OBE, who died ten years ago and was, and remains, a world authority on a somewhat underrated part of international law, namely the jus in bello', which sets rules as to the way in which, or the extent to which, hostilities can be conducted. As the editors point out, this part of international law has been somewhat neglected, due partly to the fear (denounced by Draper as spurious) that concern for the way that hostilities are conducted might be regarded as conceding the lawfulness of the hostilities themselves. [...] It is, however, in carrying out the second aim of the book under review (which is to make more readily available the heritage of written work left by Draper) that the editors have made their major contribution. [...] In short, although this is a book which cannot easily be adequately covered in a review of acceptable length, it must be highly recommended for what it tells us about a man of exceptional personal quality with a formidable expertise in a field of international law, the relevance of which has in recent times been made evident in Rwanda, in the former Yugoslavia and in Iraq, as well as the War Crimes Tribunal set up at The Hague."' Is an entertaining a read as it is informed and informative.

"Creating Minnesota: A History From The Inside Out" by Annette Atkins (Professor of History at Saint John's University and the College of Saint Benedict) is a superbly written history of how Minnesota evolved from a wilderness territory into a modern American state. In a model of accessible scholarship, Professor Atkins lays out Minnesota's achievement of statehood amidst the competing interests of indigenous natives, traders, farmers, townsmen, and politicians. There are illustrative and fascinating stories such as the family in St. Paul who managed to celebrate Christmas in 1898 with fruit that originated some 1,500 miles from their home. Professor Atkins also includes a photo essay of Minnesota communities as recorded by the cameras of local and itinerant photographers; the role of the railroads; even such culinary traditions as pan-fried walleye and walleye quesadillas. Very strongly recommended for personal, school, and community library American History collections in general, and Minnesota History shelves in particular, "Creating Minnesota" is an entertaining a read as it is informed and informative.

The Best in Minnesota History

I have read many Minnesota history books from the seminal state histories by William E. Lass and Theodore C. Blegen to works recently published for the state's sesquicentennial. But nothing can equal the incite and creativity offered by Annette Atkins in Creating Minnesota. I first discovered Atkins's work in Minnesota, Real & Imagined: Essays on the State and Its Culture where she provided an essay entitled "Facing Minnesota" and so I was very excited to read her new book on Minnesota history.

Atkins's approach is that of a seasoned historian who approaches her topic with sensitivity and intelligence. She is aware of her own limits as a historian and the ways her identification as a white, female, South Dakotan can affect her narrative. Furthermore, she does not shy away from the existential questions that any good historian must ask: Why do we study history? Who are we studying when we study history and how do we decide that they are the ones worth studying? How does our position in the narrative affect how we look at history?

But Atkins is not all academic theorizing, however valuable such theorizing may be. Her writing is readable, smart, and often funny. She plays with format in this book by telling the story of Minnesota by turns in broad strokes, with specific case studies, and in the form of a one-act play (an experiment that sometimes works and sometimes doesn't). What is most striking about her work is the humanity that comes forth when reading her stories. Glancing over the section of pictures, I am struck by the faces of the individuals who once called Minnesota home. Their stories are the ones that Atkins strives to tell in one way or another and, in my opinion, she exceeds all expectations.

Lyrical essays on the land and the people.

Annette Atkins can write the heck out of a story. Her lyrical history of Minnesota is thematic, personal, and a bit quirky. There are chapters in this book that soar, and there are chapters that touch on the mundanity of Minnesota history. I would read an essay by this author, on any topic that touches her heart or mind, in a minute. This book contains several such. My only mild critical comment is that this book would have been even better with more Annette, and a tiny bit less Minnesota, if that is even possible.
