Excellent and compelling book for all actors

Acting: The Gister Method is an excellent resource for any actor, director, or teacher of performance skills. It is a thorough and intelligent description of a way for actors to approach transformation into character. The book offers techniques, exercises, and approaches to text with a uniquely keen level of insight and depth which will allow both new and seasoned actors to explore character from methodical/factual and intuitive/imaginative perspectives. Gister's methodology is particularly notable for its approach to the concept of "action" in acting. Studying and practicing this approach will offer actors (and the directors or teachers working with them) access to a level of depth, connection, vulnerability, and honesty onstage free from affect, indicating, and strain. Alberti has structured the book in a clear, progressive style that is accessible and enjoyable to read. Having worked extensively with Gister, Alberti is able to convey this style of acting from an insider's perspective and adds his own examples of how to apply the methodology in specific cases. He has also added an incredibly useful "Action Word Lexicon" that gives actors a practical quick reference guide for working on any role. I've read most chapters twice through already and find that after more than 20 years in theatre this book has inspired and reminded me to "sharpen my tools" when approaching a new character and to relish looking again and again at the basic questions all actors and directors should be asking when approaching scripted text. It will undoubtedly become required reading in acting classes and will enhance the real transformations of every performer who absorbs its wisdom. Acting: The Gister Method will enrich and expand the worlds we see onstage by providing the actors performing with concrete methods of character exploration. Kudos to Joseph Alberti for capturing such a compelling and essential approach to acting.

LOVE LOVE LOVE!

I LOVE this book! I've read it several times already and am still learning new lessons and making new discoveries in my work as an actor. It can be really difficult to find a handbook on acting that is all-encompassing & approaches acting in a new and unique way that is accessible and practical. It's easy to read and comprehend which makes putting the method to work simple. But what is really incredible about this acting handbook is that it can be used for both seasoned and green actors. There's also an extremely useful lexicon of 'action words' and the 'how of the action words' that can really be your best resource when you're stumped or need some inspiration working on a script.
I was lucky enough to work closely with Joe Alberti throughout college and the years following. During that time he became my mentor and taught me Gister's approach to acting in depth which I found makes more sense than any acting method I've ever used and what's most important is that it really works. Before this method was written on, I felt like I had the best kept secret in the acting industry. No joke. I personally find it more effective than any other actor training I've had...and believe me, I've learned multiple techniques over the years. When I was first introduced to the Gister Method it clicked for me immediately. My acting came alive. My acting partners could feel it, my directors could feel it, the audience could feel it and most of all, I could feel it. I think as an actor it's easy to get in your head because you're trying to play an action, but this method is all about doing something to the other person in the scene with you. There is no time to think about yourself while you're acting because you're busy actually DOING something to the other actor(s) on stage. I would 100% recommend this book to any artist looking to enhance their work.

The Gister Method... My Only Method..

I was blessed to have studied with Earle. I will miss him dearly. Every script I've ever picked up, I've had his voice ringing in my ears, guiding me or sometimes referencing me back to his method through my scribbled notes for enlightenment. Now to have this book, thanks to Earle & Mr. Alberti is a treasure! Both on a professional and personal level. For anyone embarking on a career in theatre and are feeling overwhelmed by the many different techniques and approaches to acting as I was, the Gister Method is my only method! It's my map and compass. Without them I would be lost!
One time I was working on a reading of The Seagull with Earl directing. I had the role of Yakov the servant whom has about two lines, he took me aside to talk about my wants, objectives etc and the importance of the role. In a room with more experienced actors at that time, I didn't think anyone would notice or care how I approached the part. Not Earle. It has always stayed with me. This book is a thorough, flawless approach. I'm delighted to have it.
