In a boxy apartment building in an Illinois college town, Romola Mitra, a newly arrived young bride, anxiously awaits her first letter from home in India. When she accidentally opens the wrong letter, it changes her life. Decades later, her son, Amit, back in the U.S., finds the same letter and thinks he has discovered his mother's secret. But secrets carry within them their own secrets sometimes.
Amit does not know that Avinash, his devoted father, lurked on gay chat rooms at times, unable to set aside his lifelong attraction to men. Avinash, for his part, had no idea about the memories of a starry romance his dutiful wife kept tucked away among her silk saris. As Amit settles down as a computer engineer in San Francisco, he too is torn between his new life here and his duties toward the one he has left behind in India.
Don't Let Him Know sweeps up multiple generations of a family, moving from an illicit encounter in a Calcutta park to an unlikely friendship forged at a Carbondale gay bar, from midnight snacks of a great-grandmother's mango chutney to wayward temptations at a McDonald's drive-thru. Tender, funny, and beautifully told, it is an unforgettable story about the sacrifices we make for those we love.

Review
“At its best, Don't Let Him Know merges--or, more fundamentally, presents--this clash of sensibilities: Indian and American, traditional and tolerant.” ―Los Angeles Times
"Don't Let Him Know is a rich, evocative and brilliantly told tale . . . Sandip Roy has broken new ground in this tale of the modern Indian family. A lovely read." ―Abraham Verghese
"Sandip Roy’s compelling characters strive to negotiate the distances between continents, generations and sexualities; through a dazzling mosaic of narrative snapshots Roy captures the arcs of entire lifetimes." ―Manil Suri
"In Don't Let Him Know, Sandip Roy finds the hidden pockets within ordinary moments and deftly turns them out to reveal the secrets the Mitras have concealed for years. The result is a moving portrait of the loves and longings of a family split: between India and America, between past and present, and between duty and dreams." ―Celeste Ng, author of EVERYTHING I NEVER TOLD YOU

Tales of the unexpected.
By SueKich
Sandip Roy's debut is not quite a conventional novel nor quite a collection of short stories. It's more a series of vignettes that, taken together, create a convincing portrait of an arranged marriage with an undercurrent of suppressed and unspoken yearnings. I particularly loved home-sick Romola exorcising her demons by reciting in her head a litany of spices: "Turmeric, coriander, methi..."
It's not quite the usual 'immigrant experience' story either. When Avinash brings his new bride to America, Romola fails to settle and not long after their baby is born, she insists on the family's return to Calcutta. It is their son Amit who comes back to study and eventually settle in the States.
The book opens with the discovery of a fragment of an old letter that reveals a long-hidden secret. If you can resist the temptation to read the inside fly-leaf, you may find this revelation will surprise you (it did me). From this point, Roy surprises the reader further by ditching the narrative arc altogether and embarking on a series of 'snapshots' of his main protagonists at different stages of their lives.
Some of these are successful: Avinash's hatred of haircuts when he was a boy, the great-grandmother with her secret stash of rainy-day mango chutney, Aunt Meena's rare visit from Boston which has a shocking outcome. Others not so much: the story of Romola's young love for a Bollywood star before he became famous didn't really work for me. But ultimately, these simply told stories add up to more than the sum of their parts. A surprising - and surprisingly affecting - read.

A brilliant narrative of secrets that keep families together!
By preeti singh
After decades Romola comes back to the US to stay with her son and his family. Her son Amit discovers an old love letter that he believes was addressed to her. Romola is stunned when Amit hands it to her – she had meant to destroy it. Now, a widow in her sixties, what should she confess to her son?
‘Don’t Let Him Know’ is a brilliant narrative of secrets that couples keep from each other, parents keep from their children and things that children don’t tell their parents. Just as disclosure helps a marriage, so can many untold secrets keep a family together. It is not romantic love that makes a successful marriage, but commitment and duty to the family and the social fabric, at least in the Indian set-up.
Romola is wonderfully etched – as a young girl who fancies a boy who takes on the screen name suggested by her when he becomes a movie star, as a wife who keeps a firm grip on running her household and saving her marriage, as a self respecting widow who does not want to impose upon her son, and as an older woman who seeks her own independent happiness in the US.
The book moves seamlessly from India to the US, yet Kolkata and the life there form the backbone of the story. From the characters of Amit’s family, the small strifes between them and the love that binds all families to the feisty great grandmother and her obsession with food, and the angst of the closet gay – there is much to love in this novel.
The novel has strong characters except for Avinash, Romola’s husband; the reader does not quite get a glimpse into his inner world. The Sumit episode in the book would have been stronger if there was something of Avinash in it.
Reading this book was an absolute delight…and Sandip Roy has been brilliant at writing it!

Very well written with vivid descriptions, Don't Let Him Know was a fast read. It took a few chapters to realize that this was not written chronologically. But once the reader gets used to the style of storytelling, it was a smooth and enjoyable read! Lots of fun learning about it completely different culture. This was a good read
