Why did I Write this Book?

This book was written because there is not a really good media book available (my opinion). One fairly popular book caused my students to ask, "Where's the beef?" Another is so boring and disorganized that students are unable to comprehend the content. All are out of date. In the age of new media, some authors have almost forgotten that media is primarily a marketing discipline. Other books barely mention media buying which is at least half the importance of the function. None give a paragraph to IMC or integration. So here's why I decided to write my own book!

Media is a creative, strategic marketing discipline, and should be presented that way.We are in an exciting period with change all around us. We are in the midst of a 21st century revolution, but no authors seem to have noted that fact, other than the digital revolution.

Current books are not comprehensive, e.g., barely mentioning the discipline of MEDIA BUYING which is at least half of the importance of the media function and and have somehow lost their marketing focus.

Awesome media textbook

Very thorough textbook on media planning and buying. Professors should enjoy this book because it provides enough information for them to structure their course in a variety of different ways, or even use it for multiple courses. There is also a workbook available for this book as well so professors can easily assign homework assignments that are made to accompany the readings in this book.

I liked this book because it is up to date and includes examples and information using some of today's most popular companies. All of the information in this book is designed to educate students about the future of media, and it covers what is happening with media now such as the decline of newspapers and the rise of devices that allow you to skip commercials. There is a "target audience" section which covers how to best reach your target audience based on which generation they are from and provides information on the Baby Boomer generation, Generation X, Generation Y, and the newest group generation Z which will become even more of a target audience for many college students now by the time they graduate.

Students will find that this textbook is easier to read than many other textbooks and includes several helpful graphs and charts. There is a section on job opportunities which is very helpful for any students that are seriously interested in pursuing a career in media. Each chapter in the book is divided up into several smaller subsections which makes the book easier to read and understand. There is also a chapter summary at the end of each chapter which provides a short break down of the main points covered in the chapter which is perfect for reviewing before a test or quiz.

Informative and comprehensive

I teach many advertising and marketing related courses at my local college, it seems now that the biggest and most important topic I need to teach to my students are the newer forms and techniques related to media buying and how to efficiently plan a campaign. I have been searching for some quality books and information to read with the class and up until I came across this book I really wasn't having much luck finding anything sufficient enough for their high standard of learning. After reading just a few chapters of this book I knew that this was exactly what I have been looking for, the material will be perfect for the class due to it being very informative and detailed, but also written in a way that is easy to understand and learn from. Perfect for my students.

This is definitely going to be the book of the year in regards to what my class is going to emphasis in their studies, I read through the book myself to make some notes and prioritize what I was going to teach first and I literally didn't see any out of date or useless information, I am quite impressed because usually I have to trim unneeded parts and it can become quite tedious. The book is definitely the most comprehensive and educational media planning book that I have ever came across. I am looking forward to finishing the book with the class.

Comprehensive and Relevant

As a 25+ year media professional and an adjunct professor teaching Strategic Media Planning, I was thrilled to find a text and workbook that looks at media as it stands currently and discusses it in a real world way. I have adopted this text, workbook and thumbnail planner for my classes and look forward to engaging the students with this information. It's been difficult to find a text that talks about digital and alternative media and also careers in the media field. This text covers everything and then more, while making even the dreaded Media Math interesting and interactive.

For students considering a career in advertising or media, this is a text and workbook that should definitely be put on the shelf for future reference.

A GOOD book, and I'm not a druid.

I am a witch, not a druid, but I found several points of interest for myself in this book. He includes several very nice prayers for working with nature spirits, spirits of place, and the Fair Folk. He gives useful instructions for finding your local gods, the gods of local rivers and land features. He gives useful help on working with the Ancestors. These items are casually glossed over in many books on Wicca or Witchcraft, but not really explained, or given suggestions for.

This is a valuable resource - one of the very first books on Druidry drawn from a non-wiccan, scholarly perspective, adapted to practical use. Highly recommended.

I liked "Solitary Druid," I felt empowered to go ahead and work the path without asking permission from control freaks in robes. Speaking of control freaks in robes, the author goes a little too far with the idea that, of course eventually, you'll want to join a club and here's the contact information. I thought that was lame. Solitary path working is legitimate; if I ever decide to join a club, I'll go shopping for another book.

Bursting at the seams with new ideas, innovative solutions and full-on imaginative thinking.

I have been following James Canton’s work and ideas for years. In his two previous books Technofutures and The Extreme Future he provided thought-provoking glimpses into what he views are the key forces re-shaping our world. As the years unfold and so many of his predictions come to life, he has proven time and again to have an uncanny sixth sense for what’s waiting for us both around the bend – and far beyond the horizon. This exciting new book Future Smart may very well be his tour de force. Whether or not you’ll agree with all of his prognostications is hardly the point. What matters is that if you’re curious about where we're heading, Canton serves up a vast panorama of challenges and opportunities in an extraordinarily wide range of fields, including bio-technology, medicine, global commerce, finance, marketing, energy/fuel, work/play, nation-shaping, warfare, learning/education and thinking itself.
With a lifelong belief that the future just doesn’t happen – but rather that we create it, Canton has delivered a book that is simply bursting at the seams with new ideas, innovation solutions and full-on imaginative thinking.

It should have been so much better!

If one could predict the future with certainty, just think of the possibilities. Yet even getting a bit of a lead to what might be around the corner can still be a good thing.

This book aims to give you at least a head start. The author has consulted his crystal ball and looks at what he says could be some of the most important game-changing trends and considers how the reader could react to and profit from them. In just a couple of decades, it is said, we could face major seismic shifts to our everyday lives. What won’t be changing? Health and medicine, technology and communications, the global economy, the earth's climate, energy and business all face big challenges.

The author seeks to help the reader “future smart” themselves. Guarantees are, of course, not given. Yet promises are. As the book notes by reading it:”… You could become Future Smart: be able to see the changes and signals that will create a trend or alter the future before that future emerges. I can promise you that the trends in this book may give you an inside track, an insight that may transform your life, work, and, of course, and transform your future for the better.”

Despite having an interest in this area, this book didn’t really do it for this reviewer. It has a lot of potential and great insights but it suffers from verbosity and a general lack of focus. Instead of being gripped by the forecast of change and its positives and negatives, one was just being turned off. It was getting tiresome, arduous and uninspiring. A feeling of being short-changed and disappointed. This is the exact opposite of what it should be! Could the book have been one-third smaller and one-third more engaging? You bet. Here is a great case to show that quality would trump quantity.

Please! If this book is even one-tenth as good as it proclaims, it needs a massive rewrite. It doesn’t need dumbing down, it just needs opening up. If we face such seismic, life-changing challenges in the future, why put barriers up to stop people learning about what might happen and seeking to prepare themselves for this tidal wave?

Good, but could have been much better

There are some very useful perspectives included in this book, but it seems to suffer from a 'silicon valley' based "We've got this right." point of view. The goal of making us question the possibilities and call for us to reinvent ourselves were addressed, but the range of possibilities and alternatives and the need for diverse perspectives and interaction were not as well brought out. Many of the scenarios were low-hanging fruit that have been chewed on for years. It left me wanting more.

Don't waste your time.

I got this because it was free and I love good manga. This was not good. It showed promise, but never reached its potential. I bought the next three hoping it would get better, but it only got worse. The story was choppy, short, and seemed to be missing a multitude of important panels throughout. A real disappointment.

It's hard to read. The pictures and words aren't clear and that makes it difficult to enjoy. Not to mention that it is very short. However it was free (for me it was. 0.00$ 100% off) so I guess I got what I didn't pay for. I recommend it as a preview in case you want to actually buy the the Manga but otherwise you'll just be kinda 'meh' about it.

There were very few pages and they were all hard to read on my Kindle, even after trying to resize them.

It was also so short I'm not sure if I even want to get the rest of them as it wasn't long enough here to decide if I like them.

A good romance with very real, likeable, down to earth characters

Olivia Langley works twelve hour days, six days a week in her parent's restaurant. In addition, she has primary custody of her two daughters. Olivia's life takes an unexpected turn when she meets and falls in love with beautiful Bri Killington. Bri, a teacher, keeps normal working hours, and would like to have more time with Olivia.
Jackie Calhoun, who has written twentyfive published novels, excels at creating characters who are very realistic and with whom it's quite easy to identify. Olivia is just such a character. Her relationship with her daughters and her parents rings true. As does her frustration with her stressed-out life, and her genuine surprise at falling for Bri.
There are many unexpected twists and turns in this very good novel, and I hated to turn the very last page!

Disappointing! Poor character development. The main character, Olivia, is not a likable person. She's super critical of her parents who are overweight, but even after they begin to workout to lose weight she is critical of their "loose skin.". Any one that is that negative about their own parents is simply not a likable human being. The reader is completely indifferent about whether Olivia finds happiness or not.

Great source of information on a narrow topic

I bought this back when it was the current edition. I used it to prepare for the American Society for Quality (ASQ) Certified Quality Auditor exam which I passed on my first attempt. All in all the text is presented in a straightforward manner that mirrors the exam. Chapters and headings are well thought out easy to search. Even though a tiny amount of the information has been superseded and supplemented , it is still a valuable resource. The only real problem I had was with calculations for standard deviations which I believe were incorrect. I use the book to teach a specialized course for auditing Nondestructive Testing (NDT) systems.

About the Author

Scott Daley has been updating Project In Depth since the Project 2010 edition. He has been working with Project and Project Server for over a decade as a consultant, a Microsoft employee, and an independent consultant. Scott believes that project management done well is a highly underrated discipline. This book was written with the intent to explain more than just what Project does or why it does it, and to go beyond the standard narratives surrounding Project. Scott has seen Project put to use managing many different kinds of projects, and hopes that this book will clarify some of the reasons why these efforts can succeed or fail.

I'm sure someone else does this better

Quickstart was okay, but it went downhill from there.
Topics seem to be in a jumbled order, have to click links back and forth through chapters (and remember where I came from). Screenshots don't identify what I should be looking at, and in many cases it's hard to tell.
Lastly, suggesting I play with settings to get used to them rather than giving walk throughs makes this book very frustrating (for ex: correcting over allocating resources). He tells you how to do 1 or 2 very basic things, but then gives vague warnings that they may not work as expected. What am I supposed to think will happen when I "play" with more complicated options that aren't discussed? Answer: Sheer anarchy, so I just avoided playing without directions-the exact opposite of actually learning the software.

An excellent resource for understanding how to manage projects with MS ...

An excellent resource for understanding how to manage projects with MS Project 2013, but DO NOT open this book expecting to be spoon-fed. The writer assumes at least an introductory level of project management knowledge but also covers some key PM principles. I think he also expects some prior use of earlier MS Project versions. The only complaint I have is that the Kindle for PC version sometimes fails to show blocks of text until you've paged forward and back a couple times.

desk reference

Maybe I was looking to use this book for a purpose other than its intended use. This is a desk reference, not a way to learn Project 2013. It ended up being a waste of my money.
