Review – True Pruning: A Worldwide Photo Guide

“Tree Pruning” by Alex Shigo is a small but powerful book by one of the world's foremost tree experts. Here in a thin little book, Alex gives us photograph after photograph detailing how to prune and how to not prune trees. The pictures are clear, excellent and well document the points being made. The text is sparse, but clearly written in English, not jargon, and excellently outlines what the pictures are pointing out. Nearly every page is nearly filled with a picture of trees and their pruning, good and bad with a short descriptor note on what the picture is showing. After the hour or two it takes to digest this book, the reader will have a good understanding of how to prune his trees.

I highly recommend this book to home owners and park workers for a quick, clear, concise guide to tree pruning.

It's essentially a condensation of the principals Shigo presented in his book "A New Tree Biology", but directed at those who care for, and prune, trees. Before you take saw or loppers to a tree, make sure you read this book. Check the Shigo website; the prices are much better than the copies shown here.

Taming the Close

At first glance, I thought not another sales book. I've followed James for years online and always enjoyed his content so I decided to buy the book and give it a read.

In the introduction, James gives the option to fast forward to the chapter on implementing the Perfect Close. As someone who has been in sales 20 years, I am very comfortable with the entire sales process - I jumped into the meat of the book. Wow was I surprised.

James does a phenomenal job of explaining the buyer's mindset and how a strategic choice of words can lower barriers and improve trust. So simple and I had never tried the technique or considered James' angle. I was so impressed with the simplicity of the method, I turned back to page 1 and quickly devoured the entire book.

If you are new to sales or a seasoned veteran, the Perfect Close is a "must read".

Do not read another sales book before you read this book.

James is a great author but is obviously a determined student of sales. Since James started his career like many of us (transitioning from a non-sales role to one that is dependent on quotas, targets, and closing business) he has gone from a 'standing start' to sales mastery and now has shared the blueprint for best outcomes. This book is generous with information and detail and really does create a clear path to move careers to a place that one cannot get to without understanding the principles in this book.

This book will show you how to bring value at every stage of the process but, more importantly, you will learn a new definition of value- that is to say, you will see value from your client perspective. This is a sustainable difference maker in the day-to-day sales process but over the life of a career, it will put money in your pocket. I am not paid for this review- it is an honest review of the value that I see in the book.

Brilliant! I can't wait to put The Perfect Close to use!

I was reading this book on my Kindle, curled up in my favorite relaxing reading spot, and literally jumped up and ran to my computer so I could take notes - lots of notes. The bookmarks just weren't good enough! I wanted a way to find all the high points and examples quickly so I could put them to use!

I can't remember having ever been this excited about a book! The Perfect Close is brilliant - and I can't wait to put its techniques to use. Considering I read it over the Christmas holidays (Can you believe that?), I couldn't put the darn book down until I had read the last page).

Here's the scoop:

Muir's "Perfect Close" technique is simple and brilliant, especially since he provides quite a few variations and examples. And that would have been enough for 5+ stars for the book. But he doesn't stop there! He also guides us through the entire sales process to a successful close, in great detail.

This includes how to create a solid relationship with the prospective client and bring true value to any sales encounter, complete with approaching any sales encounter with the right mindset and the right kind of preparation! He even shares a powerful pose that will help you signal that you do indeed have the right mindset!

Another thing I really liked: Muir is so encouraging towards people who are relatively new to sales (including me) - and provides many examples of how they can succeed - and do so easily. This is something that really differentiates his book from many other books on sales and closing.

It's also a book (as some reviewers have noted) that's written primarily for B2B sales people, especially those selling to large companies, but much of the information applies just as much to entrepreneurs selling their products and services to smaller companies and fellow entrepreneurs - and even individuals. I'm going to recommend this book to anyone I know who's in sales.

While reading this book, I cringed at the mistakes I have made. But I also got really excited as I realized it showed me exactly how to do MUCH better in the future. It's a total game changer!

One tiny drawback... The book is much longer than I had anticipated. If I had seen that it was 300 pages long, I wouldn't have bought the Kindle version (long books can be kind of unwieldy on Kindle, especially if they're kind of technical and there's a LOT of detail I want to have at my fingertips). Needless to say, I didn't know, and I'm so glad I bought it and have the information NOW! I just kept wondering why it took so long to get through it... and I'll probably buy the physical version as well for easier access.

The Russian...and the baker....

This is the third book, in the Hart Sisters Trilogy...This is Jasmines story.

This may be a spoiler alert...

Jasmine is the baker in the family catering business....and the only triplet not married......however, engaged to Greg, until he dumps her the day before the wedding..but she really wasn't upset..just mad.

so to make a long story short, Jasmine ate the wedding cake and the family helped eat some of the food that was prepared for the wedding.....and then Jasmine packs for the honeymoon for One. She goes to relax and tries to be independent..

We are introduced to Antoniv a Russian business man who wants nothing but perfection from his employees and extravagant resorts. now understand he pays his employees very nicely...... they are well compensated, per Antoniv.........

Antoniv is on a tirade when Jasmine comes in from the beach....she automatically jumps to the employees side...she has nothing but good things to say to this man, about the resort...she doesn't realize he is the owner...so she just lets this tall, handsome, intimidating man..have it.

So now we begin...Antoniv is bewitched by the fiery, beautiful woman.....she will be his and the persuit begins....

all Jasmine wants is to be left alone, to be independent, it is hard when u r surrounded by her other two siblings......and they are happily married and babies everywhere....

But it doesn't work out that way....Antoniv and Jasmine find true love and have a magical week.....even though he dominates her the whole vacation.....

but u have to realize this is fiction and a good book to just read and be.............

Elizabeth Lennox is a good author and I enjoy her books.....
I give 3 stars...mainly because you pretty much know outcome.....big ole billionaire puts his sites on a beautiful women....I will still read these books, wish they are on the lender library.....in stead of buying......there are so many books to read from her.

a fun escape

I found the grammar and punctuation, along with sentence and paragraph structure to be exemplary.
The escapist plot of Jasmine leads into the arms of her Russian lover, Antoniv. The novel is tasteful and does not reflect crudity. The love scenes are restrained, romantic and very suggestive.
I rate this a strong 4 and would purchase it again.

The Forbidden Russian Lover (The Hart Sisters Trilogy Book 3)

The final book in this trilogy was worth the wait! As usual, the story has great hot, sexy, sizzling scenes that you do not want to miss!!! I enjoy Ms. Lennox's books because she knows how to write Strong Alpha Males where others fail. While the other authors “say” their characters are Alpha Male, it is not demonstrated in their books. Perhaps Ms. Lennox has the ability to write strong Alpha Males with confident women that tame them.

Jasmine Hart is the final triplet in the series to get her HEA. The novel starts out with Jasmine and Greg getting married and the rehearsal dinner is tonight. However, Greg is calling her from the airport and says that he cannot go through with the wedding, so in essence she is getting jilted. She stated what did she expected because Greg had proposed marriage to her via text.

Jasmine is resilient and decides to go on the honeymoon anyway, by herself, and she will not allow Janine or Jayden to go with her. She is staying at a wonderful resort in the Dominican Republic and it so happens that the Billionaire owner, Antoniv Petrov, is there inspecting his resort. Jasmine does not know who is and dresses him down when he speaks harshly to some of his employees. Antoniv is intrigued that anyone would talk to him that way and he begins to pursuit her.

Her sisters had both fallen for wealthy, powerful men and Jasmine was determined to be different. Besides, Antoniv only wanted a sexual relationship and the Hart sisters seemed to have inherited a crazy fertility somehow – both had gotten pregnant despite precautions. Because of this risk, she was still a virgin and she wanted to keep it that way. Antoniv is everything she does not want in a man. She had to find her own way!

Jasmine in no way was she was going to risk getting involved with the amazingly handsome Russian billionaire. There were too many reasons to stay away from him. But only one reason she couldn’t – she wanted him!

When it was time for her to go home, she had fallen in love with him, despite herself. She did not want to say goodbye because it hurt so much, but, he said that he was not relationship material and only wanted a sexual relationship. Jasmine gets up early the morning of her flight and slips out of Antoniv’s bed and goes home. She had to get out of there, go home and work on mending her broken heart.

You must read this to find out if Antoniv will go after Jasmine or will he go back to the life he had before he met her. And, did their sexual encounter have a surprise for her as did her sisters encounters did for them.

A who dunit, without the "who"?

Christopher Ruddy, a venerable Clinton hater, following in the footsteps of "JFK conspiracy grunt,"-- those who search for their conspiracy theories in random details under the lamp post on the grassy knoll, rather than by looking further up the evidence chain towards the "big picture," has muddied the waters so well that if I were one of the conspirators, I would welcome all the new mindless flailing and ambiguity he has introduced?

From the start, Ruddy's scattershot approach, in which he simply throws every questionable detail he can find up against the wall with the hopes something will stick, but does so without putting forth any theories of his own about who may have done it, (if indeed Foster's death was a murder instead of a suicide), was destined to get us nowhere. For even if we granted him all of the discrepancies he thinks he has uncovered at Fort Marcy Park, without his own theory of the murder, these facts do not move the ball down the field even one yard. What then? We still do not know who if it was a murder, or if so, who did it, or why?

We know who was in the White House when his body was found. We know about the rumors that he and Hillary were more than just casual friends and law partners, and that they allegedly had (or were having an affair). We know that Foster going all the way back to the Rose Law firm in Little Rock, Arkansas, occupied a central position as the "bag man" within "team Clinton?"

And this is just for starters. What does the author have to say about these rumors and why does he not attempt to connect them to the facts on the ground found while digging around on his knees at Fort Marcy Park? Why did he not begin a series of interviews himself as Ambrose Evans-Pritchard did with people with guilty knowledge? Where is the Ruddy theory about the murder/suicide to be found? Not here. So what is the point of this book? Is it just to kick up more dust, while making money off of suckers like me?

Ruddy knows as well as anyone that untimely political deaths tend to have their own logic. Thus the details on the ground are all irrelevant unless they can be linked to a theory or to someone with first hand or guilty knowledge. As in the case of the many deaths in Arkansas investigated by Ambrose Evans-Pritchard, in his book "The Secrets of Bill Clinton." In that instance, the thread of facts found on the ground were followed up with interviews of people involved with guilty knowledge and was bootstrapped to more potent information. It is the logic that must be followed until the facts begin to give up their secrets and fall in line, not the other way around as is done here.

Uncovering a pattern of certifiable facts suggesting a murder instead of a suicide, without tying them to those with the motives to have committed a crime, is worse than no investigation at all. Thus this collection of the author's own reprints from newspapers, strikes me as a money-making effort, and little more. By stirring up the pot and then leaving the details and theories to be worked out by someone else, Ruddy has proven himself to be a gadfly, but not a serious researcher or investigator. Where is the beef? Where are the theories of who did it and why? I doubt if the answers are to be found in the dirt at Fort Marcy park. One star

About the Author
Erving Goffman was Benjamin Franklin Professor of Anthropology and Sociology at the University of Pennsylvania until his death in 1982. He is recognized as one of the world's foremost social theorists and much of his work still remains in print. Among his classic books are The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life, Interaction Ritual, Stigma, Notes on the Management of Spoiled Identity, and Frame Analysis.

A Classic of Enduring Relevance

The fact that this collection of essays has been in print for almost four decades is consistent with its enduring significance. Although Goffman draws on his research in mental institutions, his writings in this book have much broader relevance. In particular, they have to do with the nature of identity, the processes whereby organizations and groupings seek to change the identities and selves of their members, and the strategies used by group members to resist those changes. At a broader level, this book is about the relationship between person and the groups of which s/he is a part. Extremely well written, and very readable with excellent use of illustrative examples, this set of essays provides unparalleled insights into and understandings of the relation between person and society.

The definitive sociological treatise of total institutions

Summary:
The contents of this book are really far too complex to summarize, but I will do my best. There are two major points made in this text. The first is the development of the concept of the total institution. Goffman gives the following characteristics of total institutions: (1)� all aspects of life are conducted in the same place under the same authority; (2)� the individual is a member of a large cohort, all treated alike; (3)� all daily activities (over a 24-hour period) are tightly scheduled; (4) there is a sharp split between supervisors and lower participants; (5) information about the member's fate is withheld.� (p. 436) The basic examples of total institutions are mental hospitals, prisons, and military boot camps, though there are numerous other institutions that could be considered total institutions as well. Goffman doesn't leave his discussion of total institutions at a simple definition, he also describes nearly every aspect of total institutions, focusing primarily on the life of the inmates of the institutions (he also discusses the roles of the staff, but that isn't really the focus) and the effects of the institutional environment on the selves and identities of the inmates.
The second major point in the text is Goffman's criticism of total institutions, which is really limited to the very last section in the book (though you could easily see an underlying criticism throughout). Goffman's basic argument is that the total institution does several things to inmates (I should note that he is speaking specifically of mental hospitals here, though some of this could likely be applied to other institutions): First it stigmatizes the inmate, preventing them from being able to ever completely reintegrate into society afterwards. Second, it forces a 'sick' identity on the inmate. For some inmates, any problems or disorders they may (or may not) have are actually encouraged and/or emphasized in mental hospitals because of the culture and environment inside. In a sense Goffman is actually arguing that total institutions create more problems then they solve by turning relatively normal people into mentally unhealthy people (a good fictitious example of this would be One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest).
Goffman's basis for his discussion and analysis is a period of time he spent in a mental hospital. As an academic work, the book is also filled with references to previous literature and explanatory notes.
My Comments:
I was actually introduced to Goffman in an advanced social theory course but it wasn't until I thought about applying the concept of total institutions to one of the institutions with which I am familiar that I actually read the book. In researching the topic it appears that very little work has actually been done on total institutions (labeled as such) since Goffman's treatise (a lot of work has been done on prisons but it is in the criminology literature and does not generally refer to prisons as total institutions). I did find several examples of papers applying this Weberian 'ideal type' to different institutions, including: Indian Reservations, Graduate School, and others.
I think the reason why there is so little work following Goffman's treatise is because he is generally right, very clear, and remarkably insightful. If he has pushed the concept to its limits then there really isn't any point in trying to push it any further. In this sense, this book is comprehensive and very, very insightful.
But one of my reviews would not be complete without a criticism or two. The only real criticisms I have are the length of the book and the organization. The book is very long and, despite using a surprisingly large font, it takes quite a while to dig through the entire thing. There is quite of bit of information that could potentially have been left out, but if he had, perhaps this wouldn't be the masterpiece it generally is considered to be. Also, and Goffman recognizes this and apologizes for it in the beginning, the organization is kind of strange. Rather than organizing the book as a book with distinct chapters it is actually just a compilation of 4 papers that he had previously published. Some of the papers are massive (over 100 pages), but the problem is that there isn't a perfectly clear logic to the organization and there is absolutely no transition from one chapter/paper to the next. This really is forgivable as an academic work, but it does make things a bit awkward for the reader.
Overall this book is superb. Not only is it well-written (though perhaps at a rather advanced level) but it is incredibly insightful. Obviously Goffman caught the essence of the concept because no one has really challenged his understandings since. If you are looking for the sociological Symbolic Interactionist perspective on total institutions (mental hospitals specifically) or are just interested in what mental hospitals are really like (though this book is likely a bit dated), then look no further than Asylums. I highly recommend this for anyone interested in these topics.

Myth-busting book about mental illness

Reading Asylums in a shattering and moving experience. Written by Erving Goffman, the book details the dead-end domain of those unfortunate to be locked away in "the prisons of the world" aka mental institutions, prisons, psych wards, boarding schools, army boot-camps, or nursing homes. The damage he uncovers is heartbreaking. What is feels like to be a prisoner in these secret worlds is examined down to the tiniest details.

It's less of a confessional of horrific conditions but a sociology manifesto for the curious reader who likes to "go undercover" to discover why nurses in psychiatric hospitals have trouble finding employment doing anything else (hint: it has something to do with drawing blood). The book concludes with a conceptual breakdown, where with alarming speed Goffman examines psychiatry and its role in actually creating mental illness in this country. Although the writing is antiquated and the prose dusty, the facts Goffman unearths are crystal-clear. I have been fascinated with the history of asylums since coming across Face of Madness: Hugh W. Diamond and the Origin of Psychiatric Photography.

Excellent reference for setting up a home workshop

Good book, full of ideas and suggestions when you are setting up a home workshop. Yes you can probably find most of these ideas on the internet but having them all put together in a coherent format is very useful. I'm very satisfied and keep referring back to the book for additional ideas or suggestions.

Amazing book!!! Here is why

When I was in paramedic school, I was having some difficulties with some of the rhythm strips at first, especially in measuring waveform distances, as well as a Mobitz 2 heart block. This book helped me put ECG's together. It starts from the very beginning, such as what the waveforms mean, what distances should be for said waveforms, and finally explanations of each rhythm, where they begin (location wise in the heart) and what they mean. At the end of each chapter, it has a review of the rhythm's you just discussed, by interpreting 10-20 strips. At the end of the book there was 200 some random strips. By the end of cardiology, I could read pretty much any strip that was thrown at me, and I occasionally go back and practice, plus reread some information about some of the ECG's we see in the field and what causes them and how to treat them. This book is great, and I would recommend it to anyone going to school to be a paramedic, RN, PA, RNP, or MD.

I love LOVE this ECG book - great for ICU prep!

I recently graduated from nursing school and have started working in a medical ICU. ECGs are part of the job and I had zero background with this material from nursing school. The hospital has a pretty rigorous course of online modules to study and although they were thorough, at the end I was still left wondering what is the best way to remember these rhythms? Well, that's where this ECG Workout book comes in. There are 3 things that make it a great learning tool and resource: 1)cheat sheets 2)tear out rhythm cards 3)practice strips divided by types of rhythm. Let me elaborate further...

Cheat Sheets - at the end of each rhythm section (ex. atrial arrhythmias) there would be a 1-page summary sheet of the key features to look for in each rhythm. I used these to help me identify the rhythms in the following pages of practice strips.

Rhythm Cards - these are like tear-out flashcards. Ironically I had planned to make some to help me remember the particulars of each rhythm, but this book did it for me! Nice formatting, very thorough.

Practice Strips - anyone who is working to learn ECGs knows that you can learn a rhythm, but none of the practice/test strips look like the "example" model you are shown. What I like in this book is that at the end of each section (atrial arrhythmias, ventricular arrhythmias, junctional arrhythmias...) each chapter has its own collection of 100 practice strips. So you take the 1-page cheat sheet for the section/chapter you are working in, and you know that the rhythms in the practice section will be one of those on the sheet. It takes away all the guessing of if the rhythm might be some other kind and it makes the study much more focused. The answers are easy to find in the back of the book and include all the analysis points of the strip to back up and strengthen your skills.

I used this book for a few days and got a 98% on my unit's ECG test. The only one I missed was because I circled the wrong answer (even though I knew the correct rhythm). Now I feel fairly confident that I can recognize rhythms in all shapes and sizes! This book was truly a significant part in bringing me to that level of understanding.

FYI, there are also the basic intro to strips and wave forms in the book. It is a full-service ECG book - I just didn't cover all of that (I focused on my favorite, most useful parts). After looking at a bunch of other ECG books, this was THE ONE.

The book itself is fine, but 95 % of the blank pages were removed by the prior owner before selling it. I am thinking of asking for reimbursement because I​ unjustly paid more than it worth.
