While the book rarely has time to delve into the details - even on topics like Roman History which it covers in far more details

Prof Alderete's course is extremely ambitious in its intent. The execution is quite satisfactory given the large scope.

Covering a few millenia of world history is an extremely difficult exercise - particularly when the major regions were completely disconnected and were worlds of their own. The lecture series effectively sweeps numerous, diverse important developments in engaging ways. While the book rarely has time to delve into the details - even on topics like Roman History which it covers in far more details than any other topic - the sprinkling of good information and insightful analysis is bound to provide something new to all but the experienced experts.

There are some areas in which the series particularly excels. For each major civilization, the lectures provide succinct but highly insightful summary of the role played by the helpful surrounding geography. The parallels drawn between various civilizations at similar times or thought evolutions are also quite remarkable.

While the lecture series has appropriate length sections on almost all topics including Mesopotamian, Egyptian, Indian, Chinese, Greek, Prussian, Christian, Meso-American, polynesian etc societies, it places relatively excessive emphasis on the Roman times while far shorter on the Arabian development.

Overall, a course that has a lot to offer.

Excellent course!

I highly recommend this course to anyone wishing to obtain a solid foundational understanding of ancient world history. It is well-taught, entertaining, and informative.

The course was perfect for someone like me--I love history, but have long felt that my general awareness of the timeline of world civilizations was lacking. Now that I have taken the course, for the first time in my life I have a solid understanding of how the world's greatest civilizations fit together, what made them great, and when and how they rose and fell.

The course is entertaining and engaging. I connected with the professor, who was young, dynamic and personable. He laid out the information in an easy-to-follow style that contained both depth and focus. The course was dense enough that after time had passed I found myself opening the course booklet to remind myself of details from previous lectures, but it was well taught so that even without the details I easily retained the gist of the material.

The course focused especially on western civilizations, dwelling in more detail on ancient Greece and Rome (including the Byzantine empire). It also included lectures on ancient China, India, the Americas and Polynesia, though those were fewer. I appreciated the professor's commentary on the nature of historical information: he was good about stating caveats about what we know vs. what we don't know, mentioning when certain theories are still being debated, and describing broad trends such as history's tendency to focus on urban culture.

This was the first Great Course I have ever taken and it has prompted me to seek out more of them. In addition, though I obtained this course from the library and have already finished it, I liked it so much that I plan to purchase it so that I can watch it a few more times later on and so that I can own the very useful course booklet. Highly recommended!

Very Good Survey Course

This is a survey course on the history of the ancient world from the beginning of civilization through the 9th century. Looks at European, Asian, American and some African civilizations. The course draws interesting comparisons between the Chinese and Roman civilizations. A major point is that ancient civilizations still strongly influence many aspects of modern life. Something I had not seen before, was the idea that the Arab conquests changed the focus of European history from the Mediterranean to inland cultures.

A book that draw you to the presence of God

As a born again believer, a follower of Jesus Christ there is one thing that should always be at the forefront of our relationship with Jesus and that is His presence. You find that in this christian walk there are so many things to do for Jesus but the main thing is not doing it's being. Hosting His Presence is about us carrying His presence and understanding what this is. This book by far is the best that Bill has written. God's presence is what we are after. Being surrounded with Him is the utmost number one important thing in a Christians walk. This book draws you into knowing God. It is inspiring and contagious.

A must read!!!!

Like a skilled photographer, who when taking a picture of a vast landscape draws our focus to a specific point of beauty, Pastor Bill Johnson has penned a work that describes and illuminates the glorious focal point of the Christian way of life; hosting the presence of God. This book will birth within you an unquenchable hunger to host God's presence. More than once I found myself under the power of the Holy Spirit as I earnestly searched through its pages knowing that I was being taken on a journey that would change me forever. As I finished the last page several hours ago I realized that this is a book I will re-read many times. It is that powerful. Get a copy and read it. Your life will be changed as you learn what it means to host the presence of God. Prepare to fall in love with God all over again. There is a passionate message describing His desire to be in relationship with you written within the pages of this book. I don't know how to describe it any better. As I read this book, I felt the presence of God. Read it and you will see what I mean.

THE ONE THING

We live in an information-rich society. Our churches reflect the same theme: Information. The trouble is, God reveals Himself to us in revelation and personal experience. In fact, He hides from the lukewarm and the scoffer, while revealing Himself to the "dirty rotten sinner" who is seeking Him with their whole heart. Pastor Bill Johnson hits the nail on the head just as King David did by seeking with all his heart "the one thing." What is that "one thing?" It is hosting the presence of God. (Psalm 27:4)

With no apology or excuses I say that Jesus was fully man, and depended on God fully for everything He did and everything he said....just like you and me. The Last days will become an enlightenment of grace and the Father's love. For that to tke place, we desperately need "the one thing: God's presence. If this book is not a foundational work for every member in every church, then what is? You have heard that "overcoming sin is the principle thing." Hosting His presence is how that happens! You have heard it said "We need to overcome fear in these perilous times." Hosting His presence is how it happens! You have heard it said "We need personal and national repentance and miraculous breakthroughs!" Hosting His presence is how it happens.

Someone once said: "I don't care where you go. I don't care what you do. I only want to be with you." THAT is "the one thing." According to Psalm 22:3, God inhabits the praises of His believers. Pastor Bill reminds us that Derek Prince said: "If I have 10 minutes in prayer, 8 minutes should be in worship." How humbled I am, and how right he is. Bill will take paper and a pen with him during his prayer time to write down impressions of what Holy Spirit is saying to him. Why bother? Because when you really really really love someone, you treasure everything about them, including every word spoken to you; more than the food on your table or the bed you sleep on.

No wonder Bill Johnson's life has impacted so many. He focuses on "the one thing", hosting the presence of the One who would do anything to to bring him home to marry him, even if it including surrendering His life. "THE ONE THING." It's how our heavenly Father feels about you and me. If you decide to hunger for "the one thing", your touched life can change the atmosphere over this country and the world. Hosting His presence is that important.

About the Author
Anders Åslund was a senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics from 2006 to May 2015. He examined the economic policies of Russia, Ukraine, and Eastern Europe, as well as the broader implications of economic transition. Aslund served as an economic adviser to the governments of Russia in 1991-94 and Ukraine in 1994-97. He is a leading specialist on postcommunist economic transformation with more than 30 years of experience in the field.

Simeon Djankov, nonresident senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics, was deputy prime minister and minister of finance of Bulgaria from 2009 to 2013. In this capacity, he represented his country at the Ecofin meetings of finance ministers in Brussels. Prior to his cabinet appointment, Djankov was chief economist of the finance and private sector vice presidency of the World Bank. In his 14 years at the Bank, he worked on regional trade agreements in North Africa, enterprise restructuring and privatization in transition economies, corporate governance in East Asia, and regulatory reforms around the world. He is the founder of the World Bank's Doing Business project. He is author of Inside the Euro Crisis: An Eyewitness Account (2014) and principal author of the World Development Report 2002.

Must read for a macroeconomist, civil activist/politician or even a housewife - to not take the current CSE wellfare for granted

As a translator of the official Ukrainian edition, I strongly recommend it for anybody who is looking for a summary of post-Soviet transition history, results and outlooks.
As to the quality, just a few hiccups (less than ten) have been noticed - fairly excellent for such for a huge volume of about dozen different authors.

You cannot imagine how valuable this book can be; nearly 100 graphs and tables packed into 124 fun to read pages!

Don Wheeler, former colleague of W. Edwards Deming, explains how VERY SIMPLE statistics can transform any business process.

As a young boy in Tennessee, I sometimes uncovered "white lightning" (moonshine whiskey) hidden in forests. MIght his East Tennessee roots give Wheeler his rare sense of humor and fascination with how data and KPI's can be used to "cheat?"

This book is very rich in actual examples of data being used to mislead as well as KPI's which actually promote THE OPPOSITE behavior intended.

Wheeler takes the reader through multiple "cycles of learning" in this short read which is easily completed in under 2 hours on a flight. But be warned; once you read this book you will want to reread it and apply the lessons many times.

Are your processes "predictable" or are they "unpredictable?" With his jargon free, reader friendly style, Wheeler explains clearly 3 kinds of "Voice of the Customer" specifications, as well as sharing multiple examples and pitfalls which leaders make converting data into knowledge.

If you suffer from "rare" but important defects, be sure to read the next to last chapter. Brilliant!

The cases on pages 86 and 131 will inspire you to gain new insights building on the easily understandable histograms.

A must read for any Lean Six Sigma Executive, Sponsor or Belt. I buy this book in boxes of 10; I often find my colleagues and contacts asking to have my copy!

Confused When Others Talk About Data?

I wish economists and journalists and other leaders would read books like Understanding Variation by Donald Wheeler. Today the news is that unemployment claims went up, for the first time in 3 weeks. Analysts are now speculating that maybe the recovery is not as strong as it appears.

Excuse me. What are you saying? Are you saying that one upward blip can be extrapolated into a trend? Are you saying that because we flipped a coin 3 times and got heads (unemployment going down), and now we got a tail (unemployment going up) that our coin is defective? Are you saying that because temperatures were warmer than usual last week that we won't have winter?

One data point does not make a trend. We can't say the recovery is soft unless we know what the normal variation is on the out-of-work claims from week to week. Any result from week to week is going to be up or down (like heads or tails). Just because it goes up doesn't mean that a trend has reversed, when we didn't have a significant trend in the first place. 3 weeks of claims going down, analogous to coin flipping, could happen 1 in 8 times. The chance of it going down a fourth time is 1 in 16, unless there's a change in the system that creates unemployment claims (or better, creates jobs). Until we get to the odds of 1 in 64 (6 weeks in a row in the same direction--or some say, 1 in 256 is less risky for identifying a false trend) we can't say that we had an unemployment trend at all.

Please, Mr/Ms Economist and Mr/Ms Journalist, don't get confused and become Chicken Little thinking the economic sky is falling based on one piece of data that was going to show up normally. Read Wheeler's book to better understand all this.

I know kung fu

After reading this book (only took a couple of evenings) I feel like Keanu Reaves in The Matrix.

I've been studying Dr. Deming's system of profound knowledge, and the bit about understanding variation has been on my TODO list. This book nailed it with a crystal clear introduction to Statistical Process Control (SPC), which Dr. Deming promoted based on his learnings from statistician Walter Shewhart when they worked together at Bell Labs. As Dr. Deming pointed out, an eighth-grader could do this; it's not supposed to be hard, so take the negative reviews of this book with a grain of salt. If you already understand and use SPC, you won't gain nearly as much from this book as a newbie like myself.

I remember reading Deming's Out of the Crisis and thinking that the terminology around SPC could easily be confused. "Control" is a very loaded term. Dr. Wheeler has come up with a new terminology, replacing "Control" with "Predictability", among other things. This is going to make it much easier for me to talk about without creating misconceptions.

Thanks Dr. Wheeler for making this topic so approachable and for framing it in such a compelling way, and for not being afraid to promote an entirely new terminology even when your book publishing company is known as "SPC Publishing". This reinforces your own personal belief in continual improvement.

For this third edition, all chapters have been extensively revised and updated. The text has been considerably expanded to provide a comprehensive yet practical overview of the state of the field. Two new chapters have been added: "Psychometrics in Neuropsychological Assessment" and "Norms in Psychological Assessment." The first two chapters present basic psychometric concepts and principles. Chapters three and four consider practical aspects of the history-taking interview and the assessment process itself. Chapter five provides guidelines on report-writing and chapters six through sixteen consist of detailed, critical reviews of neuropsychological tests, and address the topics of intelligence, achievement, executive function, attention, memory, language, visual perception, somatosensory olfactory function, mood/personality, and response bias. Of interest to neuropsychologists, neurologists, psychiatrists, and educational and clinical psychologists working with adults as well as pediatric populations, this volume will aid practitioners in selecting appropriate testing measures for their patients, and will provide them with the knowledge needed to make empirically supported interpretations of test results.

An Excellent Resource for Neuropsych Clinicians

This is an excellent source for beginning and advanced clinicians. The descriptions of the tests and test administration are concise and easy to understand. In addition, the norms for each test are included. The tests are grouped by the what specific areas they measure (i.e., Intelligence, Achievement, Memory, and Sensory and Motor areas). Since this text covers a wide array of tests, it is well worth the investment.

The 2nd edition of the Compendium is an indispensable collection of norms for NP tests, many in the public domain. I bought the 3rd edition assuming that it would provide updated norms drawing on research in the intervening years, but I was sorely disappointed.
The 3rd edition contains much less actual data than its predecessor. It is mostly a compendium of reviews of commercially available assessment products, some having nothing to do with NP. If I wanted that, I would have bought the latest Groth Marnat. I wish the editors had taken the time to incorporate norms and research findings since 1998 instead of throwing together this lazy hodgepodge.

Great Reference!

This book is an excellent update of the previous edition. Vastly comprehensive and well organized, it is a great technical resource and an easy read. I highly recommend this book as an essential reference for neuropsychology.
