About the Author
Ben Milgate was told to learn to cook at 15 because 'I wasn't very good at school . His first job was work experience in 'about five kitchens' at the Sydney Opera House he loved it. Now he cooks with fire every day for a living. Elvis Abrahanowicz grew up in Argentina eating a lot of barbecues. Although he trained and worked in some of Sydney s finest restaurants, when it came time to open his own he wanted something with more of a relaxed feel. Ben and Elvis made a splash into Sydney's restaurant scene when they opened Bodega, a Spanish/Argentinian tapas eatery in 2006. In 2010, they launched Porteno, their local take on an Argentinian asador, which has bagged a swathe of Australian gourmet awards, most recently the 2012 Time Out Food Awards 'People's Choice Award'. Ben and Elvis were also named joint Chefs of the Year in 2012 by the Sydney Morning Herald.

great restaurant, great cookbook

After eating at Porteno in Sydney, I hoped that they would put out a cookbook and here it is. Great food, great instruction, great recipes. Some of the best recipes are the chimichurri, chorizo and even the brussels sprouts. Follow the recipes closely and enjoy the food!

Shiitake cultivation : not for everybody

This is a well-written book about technical and practical aspects of commercial shiitake growing. If you are seriously considering commercial production of shiitake it is a must-have book.
Its subtitle, "The Art and Science of Mushroom Growing" is misleading. Far more accurate would be "The Science and Practice of Commercial Shiitake Production". Except for a phylogenetic references, it has nothing to say about mushrooms other than shiitake. I had set out to learn enough about mushrooms in general and shiitake in particular to grow a few for friends and family. Unfortunately, the shiitake is native to Southeast Asia and likes a steadily warm humid environment. Based on what I gathered from this book, neither amateur nor commercial shiitake production is practical where I live, so I'm still looking for a good book on small-scale mushroom cultivation in a temperate climate

These Were the Greeks

This book is one of the books that, through vivid detail and scattered pictures, allows the ancient Greek world to practically come alive. It goes from the pre-Greek era and continues on through the days of the post-Greek glory, when all the Greeks had to offer was knowledge. I found the book sorely lacking as far as describing the multitude of gods, but beyond that, I believe that it thoroughly captured the true essence of Greek life. It is filled from cover to cover with information, and for someone who wants to know just how the Greeks went about their daily life, then this is the book for you. It lacks some of the more basic things you would expect to find out of a book full of a different language, such as a pronunciation guide, but hey, from a book this good, you hardly even notice!

Read it before a trip to Greece

I read this book before a trip to see the antiquities—the Parthenon, the palace at Knossos, the treasures from archaeological digs, etc. The book greatly increased my understanding and appreciation of the amazing things I saw in Greece. Sometimes the text lacks detail, but if you want more detail, you can always find something deeper than this 200-page quick read.

Lots of information, TERRIBLE editing

I received this book as a gift, after having heard great things about it. After owning it for a few months, I've come to the conclusion that this is an excellent example of when not to buy a book based on online reviews alone. (ironic that I should be writing that in just such a review, isn't it?)

The summary is right there in my title, "Lots of information, TERRIBLE editing". there are typos on nearly half the pages, several captions are switched, the insets refer to pictures as being below when they're above and vice versa, and some images were clearly simply cut from websites and scaled out of proportion without any regard to their quality. (the entire alternative energy section springs to mind)

If you have any experience with canning whatsoever, then before you buy this book you should know that a disproportionate percentage of the book is devoted to canning your food. While some topics get a single page worth of text, canning alone apparently warrants forty seven.

If for some reason you already own this book and are reading this, please pay attention when reading the edible poisonous mushroom section. Although its caption is accurate, the VERY POISONOUS wild amanita mushroom is featured in a picture without its own heading.

And finally, a note to Ms. Gehring:

My apologies if the above comes off as harsh. It is readily apparent that a lot of work went into gathering the information contained in your book, but it's just as apparent that little to no work went into the editing process. I realize that things like typefaces are important. But text that relates accurately to the illustration, and illustrations that are legible are just as important, if not more so.
As this is the first printing, I hope my criticism can be considered constructive, and your next edition will be greatly improved.

I love the information in this book, However the print is way too small. That makes it difficult to read.

The canning times and pressures I'm not sure of, it is not listed that they are the approved ones from the FDA to avoid botulism.

Over all a lot of useful information to have on hand.

He fought for over 2 years in front line and behind the front lines of mortal combat in the Korean war, spent some time in a POW torture camp, had to learn to walk again, use forearms and hands again. At an early age was taught in China and Japan that which is known as the Universal Spiritual Truth Knowledge which is the knowledge from which came the Spiritual Belief Systems and today's Religions. In some places it still exists in it's pure short form. It can easily be written on 3 pages. The author has used this knowledge and the functions and abilities within the Universal Life Energy for over 50 years. He possesses near to instant forgiveness. He does not do the angry and sustains serious control of Ego, the 2 most negative, destructive behavior of humans. He desires no personal publicity, desires no accolades. This book presents many positive ideas drawn from varied different sources. It's somewhat repetitive, but reads fluidly. The one humourous aspect of the book is the language phrasing it is written in. The author addresses the reader in terms like "oh human" and describes things as "it be this" and "it makes the much" which is similar to theological old english texts and makes it somewhat difficult to take the book seriously. I don't know why the author felt it nessesary to write in that style. However if you can get past that, the book presents some good ideas that you can use to live your daily life.
