Dated But Still Useful
By Mark W. Ryburn
Taller's research was definitely avant-garde for its time. The concept of supplying additional essential fats in the diet to bring the body in balance was no doubt quite radical then. Simon and Schuster spared no amount of cheapness when they published this book. The pages are newsprint and cut unevenly. (I had actually considered possibly reprinting this book, but much of its information is completely dated and the book would really need a full re-write--a task I am not qualified to do.)

Early Low Carb Guru
By B. K. Loots
As a veteran low-carb dietary adherent, I was curious about the principles in Herman Taller's early work on this subject. As part of diet history, it's interesting, and I'm happy to have the book in my low-carb library. However, much new science has been applied to the investigation of low-carbohydrate nutrition in the years since, so I would not recommend it as a guiding text.

Elementary Korean is the best
By Russell D. Holloway
After studying Korean (on my own using internet sources etc etc) I have decided that this book is definitely by far one of the best books you can get for Korean. It contains an incredible amount of information. Most courses are quite small for Korean and do not contain a great deal, or are hard to manage. I have looked at the Rosetta Stone series for Korean (costing $300) and this $50 book is by far better than that whole program. It is better than any books I have seen in book stores. I have done the Pimsleur course which is a little strange in my opinion. Pimsleur does help with pronunciation a little bit but some of the language structure is a bit weird and not natural for the Korean Language. I feel that ever since I bought this book a couple weeks ago (I am on lesson 6 out of 15 I believe) I am learning at a much faster pace than I ever was before.

1) The grammar in this is excellent. It contains many many grammar points for every chapter and introduces them in a nice order (meaning you get important stuff first unlike some other courses I have looked at where you have to wait till near the end of the course to really dig into some good grammar).
2) The vocabulary consists of a surplus of words that anyone could ever want to learn as they are starting Korean.

I admit, this course is really hard and does contain a lot of information right from the start and might be hard on someone who does not know anything about Korean, but if you have already begun looking into the Korean Language, I highly recommend this. I do not know how good of a job it does teaching Hangul as I already knew most Hangul when beginning this book, but I do know it covered some points and specific irregulars and pronunciation rules that I had not previously known so it probably is very good at Hangul as well. Others have said to do the 2 Hangul chapters first, which might be a good idea to someone who does not know it. It should be a pretty good book for teaching Hangul but I am not entirely sure if it teaches well and easy to understand for someone who does not know Hangul, but it seems to do a good job. The first two chapters on just basic sentences and sayings people should know were alright in my opinion. Chapter 1 is good because it deals with just simple things like yes, no, nice to meet you, thank you, etc...But honestly, the romanization confuses me very very much so I would learn Hangul first (it has both romanization and Hangul in the chapters 1 and 2 because they do not introduce Hangul until chapter 3). The romanization has a chart for how to pronounce all the strange letters they use for romanization and all, and I honestly think Hangul would be much easier to learn than learning romanization used in these two chapters. But if you know the Hangul (which is covered in the book) then chapter 1 is very good. Chapter 2 covers basic information on what a teacher might say in the classroom or the students, which didn't do much for me as I am learning completely on my own. 3 and 4 is Hangul. Chapter 5 is where this book finally really kicks in. Starting with Chapter 5 you have all your lists of vocabulary, your dialogues, and many explanations on grammar. Chapter 5 is where it gets intense.

People have mentioned the audio cd is not very good. I disagree. I think it is excellent. Even though it is just one 74 minute cd (seemed like it wouldn't last very long) it has most anything on the cd you would want being pronounced. It does not give you time to repeat after them or does not say words twice, but it fits a lot of words and spoken Korean on the one cd. You can listen to it and figure out how the word should be said. The woman speaker speaks at a nice pace, while the male speaker is a little faster but still a nice pace in my opinion. Listening to the male speaker helps build your listening comprehension because when speaking with a real Korean it will be just as hard if not harder to understand. The cd is excellent in my opinion.

Lastly, I want to mention the exercises. There are exercises at the ends of the chapters (mainly beginning with Chapter 5 when the real lessons begin) which I highly recommend you doing. Luckily I am highly interested in the Korean language and find it very fun to learn so I can make myself do them. Some may seem a bit dull or long or pointless at first but I know that's not the case. When it says figure out what this is in Korean and write out the WHOLE sentence for each one, I highly recommend doing that. It will greatly help, even if it is a lot of work. It has all the answers (or answers that work - for example if it says translate this sentence into Korean, it will give a correct translation, when there are a couple different ways to translate it. That is the only problem I have found so far. Sometimes its hard to check your answers if your working on your own and they only give one possible solution...but, they do cover an answer for every exercise in the book.).

Overall, I like everything about this book. It covers everything very well.

nice book
By esseyo
Since I am looking mostly for reading/writing proficiency I find this to be a great book.

+ The grammar notes are clear and well illustrated.
+ The vocabulary is a lot but not completely overwhelming. The authors try to group closely related words physically close together to reduce the cost of learning new vocabulary.
+ Better than Myondo in presentation of material. Instead of spreading out related grammar material, it tries to present them together.
+ What I think is really great are the pronunciation rules ... you won't find this kind of practicality and detail in most other text. (Now, Myondo is very detailed but describing ssang-chiut as a voiceless alveo-palatal glottalized affricative isn't particularly helpful to me).
+ No Chinese characters are used in this book which is a plus at this level since Chinese characters rarely appear in the main text of popular Korean newspapers anyway
+ The authors actually provide a decent number of exercises with ANSWERS in the back! Now what they need to publish next is a supplementary reading and exercise book.

- I concur with a previous reviewer that the CD does not have enough basic sound examples.

4.5 stars.

Wonderful, but difficult book
By Ryan
As others have said, this book is difficult, but wonderful. It will not hold your hand, and you have to be dedicated to learning the language. Personally, I enjoy that its raw learning without all the fluffy stuff (corny graphics, etc). I love that it is all in Hangul without Romanizations (there are only Romanizations in chapters 1-3). I have used other texts that have full Romanizations and many times they end up hurting you in the end because they are wrong, inconsistant, and you become dependant on them. There is also a good Korean-English/English-Korean glossary in the back in Hangul-alphabetical order (most are not), so you don't really need a dictionary yet, but of course one wouldn't hurt (warning: the dictionary with the big L on the cover is good, but in Romanized-alphabetical order which can be a pain for looking up Hangul words). Here are some things that will help you though:
-Yes, the CD is super fast, but that is the normal speaking speed in Korea. What I did to make it easier to hear was to play the CD in Windows Media Player and use the "Play Speed" function to slow down the CD. It really helped!
-Have a very basic understanding of some linguistics terms such as voiced, unvoiced, unreleased, aspirated. The authors are trained linguistics and sometimes use some jargon, although it is usually explained.
-I highly recommend learning Hangul (the Korean alphabet) before starting this book. The authors do not introduce it (but still use it) until chapter 3, which is very difficult if you do not have a Korean teacher.
-That brings my last point. If you know a native Korean, make sure you use him/her as a resource. That probably goes without saying for any book. However, I have been learning Korean about 90% on my own, and have used this book as my guide fairly successfully (no fault of the book; it is just a HARD language to grasp).
Good luck with your Korean learning!

Hoffman, J.D. – Author of "The Soulstealer War" series “Refreshingly Innovative” “Unlike the countless volumes written on self-understanding and mastery, which often focus on understanding past traumas and their impact on the dilemmas you are currently facing, Joseph begins from an entirely different, refreshingly innovative premise: you already work perfectly; you’ve just forgotten what that’s like and how to retrieve the state in which it occurs. Drawing upon the ideas of some notable and influential people in his life—Joseph Campbell, Richard Bandler and most eminently,Roye Fraser, Dr. Riggio synthesized some of their ideas with his own to create the Mythoself Process. He has made ground-breaking contributions in applications of communication, interaction and performance. The fundamental technology that Joseph continues to develop is aesthetically organized and transcends the limitations of ordinary cognition running the process at the sub-cortical level of implicit learning in what he refers to as the “silent brain”.

Joseph is letting his secrets out here, this book is worth its weight in gold
By Mr. Michael Roach
Magic in Action was Richard Bandler's book that took you behind the scenes of what he was doing in NLP in this book Joseph takes you behind the scenes of what he does with the MythoSelf Process.

In the foreword Richard Bandler says: "As you are reading you will find yourself immersed in the experience of what it is like to access the Ready State along with the participants in the workshop. Rather than telling you about what he did, Joseph brings you with him on a journey of profound transformation. This alone would make this book unique and remarkably worthwhile, however he goes further.... Much further. Interspersed in the exchanges from the transcripts Joseph pulls back the curtain and exposes exactly what he's doing with the group and why he is doing it.

If you've ever hoped to experience the work of a master change artist in action here's a chance in black and white."

The 'Ready State' is the product of the MythoSelf Process, the ability to respond and to take action to get the result you intend. Leadership experts Peter M. Senge and Joseph Jaworski speak to this in their more recent work. That when leaders have 'presence' as they define it things that weren't possible before become possible.

What Dr. Joseph Riggio reveals is the 'how to' for this. How you lead yourself, and when you can do that how it becomes possible to lead others.

If you've read Jaworski and Senge you'll understand that when I describe what Joseph does as spiritual how that connection or fulfilment is a requirement for a leader. But while they talk about and share their spiritual experiences Joseph actually takes you through the process of how to make this connection for yourself.

In the book Joseph says: "You'll begin to notice again the details of what it was like for you at one time to pay attention to the world around you in that very positive, hypersensitive way that children have - kind of like how you might imagine Sherlock Holmes, Indiana Jones, Gandalf, or maybe you might prefer the idea of a Jedi Knight like Yoda, Obi Wan Kenobi or Luke Skywalker might do it." I've worked with Joseph as a private client and that situational awareness is now my personal experience.

What's fascinating is hearing Joseph telling you what he is doing after he has done it with the group so you can see the structure of how a professional exquisite communicator works. Its great to see this to how you can incorporate this 'conversational hypnosis' in the communication that you do whether that is in a meeting, making a presentation or just influencing those you care about to help them make the right decision.

I've read Dan Seigel and a lot of neuroscience but Joseph shows the practical application of using this knowledge: "The idea of accessing a best state, or as I prefer it the Ready State is based on the neurological condition of the excitatory bias. As you've already read, when you are operating from the excitatory bias the neurological system is open to receiving new data. The excitatory bias is based on the somatic, or body based configuration that you are holding. Literally where in your body you are holding relaxations and contractions, and how this translates into your posture, gestures and expressions, forms the ground of your experience."

I've learnt from Joseph what I perhaps understood intellectually but couldn't really put into a practice that gets results, that I think with my body just as much with my head. And paying attention to this 'primal wisdom' enables me to perform at a significantly more elite level and get the results that come from that both professionally AND personally.

In many ways I'd like to buy all the copies of this book and just give them to my clients, friends and family. But I can't do this as it's published in Kindle format. I've paid thousands for hours of Joseph's time and it was worth every penny. Joseph is letting his secrets out there, this book is worth its weight in gold. Experience for yourself the value of interacting with a world-class leadership coach and mentor, someone who can enable in you the transformation that makes extraordinary success and elite performance possible. This could be the first step on your Hero's Journey which Joseph brings a depth of understanding and practical usefulness to that I've not seen anywhere else, and I've read most of Joseph Campbell's work.

Narcissistic, crude attempt to manipulate reader so as to elevate Riggio's ego
By Super Knot
We start with reading two chapters where Riggio repeatedly tells us what reading the book will do for us. Presumably some kind of framing.

He goes on to try to pace the reader/audience with truisms of how lost and confused we must be inside our own lives. Then voila! We have the answer! It's him! It's Joseph Riggio! He and the book are the miraculous savior we have been waiting for!
Frankly, his ideas are common and banal. My impression is that he is disconnected, not having actually embodied what he preaches. He may like "the State of Perfection" but I doubt he has any first hand experience of it, at least at the time of writing. What comes through is insecurity and cheap sophistry.
In the transcripts of one-to-one work he includes in the book, he uses every line with JOSEPH RIGGIO so we know who to credit for his miraculous wisdom. Don't most transcripts use initials?
I wanted to like this book. When I saw another reviewer write that it's 'manipulative' I thought that may be interesting to model, useful in some way. Now that I've read this book, I understand that yes, it is manipulative but it's done by what I infer as an insecure person in a very obvious and cheesy way. Give it a miss. Go read Milton Erickson books instead.

Must read for anyone who wants to truly live his/her life by design EFFORTLESSLY!

Reading Joseph's book is like riding a roller coaster. It's exciting, challenging and scaring at the same time. Joseph laid out a powerful and effortless path in this book for those who want to truly live a successful and deeply satisfied life and make it. We used to follow Joseph around the world to experience this powerful work and now you can sit at home, have a cup of coffee or tea and enjoy the transformation just by reading The State of Perfection brings you naturally! Joseph and his work have helped me create a magical life and it really WORKS!

Erotica author Kate McMannis has crippling writer’s block and a deadline in less than two months. When a beautiful woman named Erato appears at her house and claims to be her muse, Kate isn’t certain whether Erato is mentally ill or truly her supernatural savior. Either way, when the incredible sex Erato offers leads to genuine inspiration, Kate isn’t inclined to refuse her unusual brand of help. When a little fantasy fulfillment with Erato inadvertently leads her to the shy and gorgeous Olive Johnson, unexpected feelings threaten to derail Kate’s motivation once again. Erato is just as determined to keep her writing on track as Kate is to explore her very real attraction to Olive—which leads to friction that threatens not only Kate’s ability to meet her deadline, but also her burgeoning romance with Olive. Caught between a contractual obligation and her heart, is there any way for Kate to have it all?

By Angelica Quintero
This is the story of Kate McMannis and how she deals with a big case of writer’s block with the help of Erato her personal muse and Olive the additional part for all the threesomes scenes and actual love interest in this story. What else can I say about this story? P - O - R - N

I mean this book is 95% porn and 5% story with like 2% character development in that same story porcentage but I have to give props to the author for always making a point of including consent and her insistent effort to portray somewhat very realistic sexual experiences, it also somewhat addresses an abusive relationship (not in the physical sense but some aspects of it) and it made me uncomfortable of the lack of acknowledgment it got so weird. Still the whole book is an ode to sex and consent and how amazing consent sounds as a form of foreplay so, YAY FOR AWESOME CONSENSUAL EXPLICIT S E X!

Stars: 2.5 but if I have to give a round number it’d be 3 because I really like my porn with a plot and if it has angst and drama is a bonus, this isn’t plot driven porn so it’s like fanservice

Conclusion: Liked, but don't quite love it.

*Thanks for the ARC, Netgalley!*

The Muse is no doubt sexy. But I can't help but think that this is Meghan's very own fantasy were she ever caught in a writer's block.

We have an erotica author, a Ms Kate McMannis (in retrospect, Meghan O'Brien herself), who was suffering from a severe writer's block. Due date's in two months and she barely got anything down. Just as she was about to put off writing, yet again, under the guise of needing something at the store, Erato appeared. Now here what I don't get nor received any tangible conclusion.

Who is this Erato who claimed that she's The Muse? Is she some kind of dirty, sexy, spectre? She has this uncanny ability to know what Kate is thinking, feeling, doing. It's freaky. So Erato comes in and they got down to something dirty. And miraculously, that helped Kate's juices (no pun intended, I swear!) to flow.

Overall, a sexy read. But I don't quite enjoy the idea of this being a dirty Mary Sue book. One of my favourite scenes: the part when Erato helped reenact one of Kate's dirty scenes.

Eh.... Not so much...
By Nicole
I paid $13 for this book (including shipping), and it's my moral duty to waive other readers off. If you really, really, must get this book, don't spring for a paperback. It's not worth the money, and you're stuck with a book you don't really like. The best way to read this book is for free on someone else's Kindle. If I'd have done that, I might not be so hard on it.

Anyway, the plot isn't original and it's kind of annoying: a muse turns up on the doorstep of an author stuck in a rut of writer's block. A little sexy-time with the muse and the creative juices start flowing again. A threesome with a chick they pick up in a bar leads to some tension and conflict... yawn... I'm bored again.

Look, this author writes sexy scenes. It's what she does best. I'm not too proud to admit that's exactly why I bought this book. But I gotta have more than a laundry list of sex acts. I need characters I can invest in, and without them, reading through the sexual checklist started to feel like work.

I just really didn't care about the author's dilemma (writer's block). I skimmed that part. The love interest was boring too. Her physical description was so matter of fact, that I got no sense of personality or character... would it kill the author to use a metaphor every once in a while? I just wasn't invested in the people. So when they had sex it didn't move me... it was only words on paper. There was no sense of danger or risk or emotional investment. And could the author please stop... PLEASE STOP with the pronoun confusion? If three women are having sex, then it gets really confusing if "she put her hand on her thigh..." Which "she" and which "her" are we talking about here? It's a buzz kill to try and figure out.

Which brings me to the muse. A MUSE. One of the nine Greek Muses... A GOD. The daughter of Zeus and Mnemosyne (memory). This character should have been awesome. This was an opportunity for super coolness. Erato should have been badass as all hell. Instead she was boring... and annoying.

Erato is supposed to play the part of the "Manic-Pixie-Dream-Girl," a trope in itself, but whatever. Manic-pixie-dream-girls are fun. The problem is that Erato isn't manic. She's dull. Her supernatural nature is barely explored, and she spends way too much time in the kitchen making snacks and not enough time being a GOD.

I don't want to trash this book too much, because I've enjoyed some of the author's other work-- "The Night Off" being my favorite. Since I more than got my money's worth on that book, we'll call it even with this one.

2014 Best Books About the Church from Byron Borger, Hearts and Minds Bookstore "I thought God had called me to plant this church. Why did we have to shut our doors after only three years?" "I was at my breaking point. Then I got the news that our nine-year-old daughter had leukemia. I would have quit ministry forever, but I had no other employable skills." "False accusations were made against me and my family, wrecking our reputation permanently and forcing us to leave not only the church, but move out of the area." "I've served my church for the past 27 years and I've grown that church from 150 to 24 people." What do we do when we've failed? Some ministries are shipwrecked by moral failures like affairs or embezzlement. But for most of us, the sense of failure is more ordinary: disillusionment, inadequacy, declining budgets, poor decisions, opposition, depression, burnout. Many pastors are deeply broken and wounded, and we come to doubt that God has any use for us. J.R. Briggs, founder of the Epic Fail Pastors Conference, knows what failure feels like. He has listened to pastors who were busted in a prostitution sting or found themselves homeless when ejected from ministry. With candid vulnerability, Briggs explores the landscape of failure, how it devastates us and how it transforms us. Without offering pat answers or quick fixes, he challenges our cultural expectations of success and gives us permission to grieve our losses. Somehow, in the midst of our pain, we are better positioned to receive the grace of healing and restoration.

Review
"Here is a theology of failure to go with Jesus' sacrament of failure ('shake the dust off your feet and move on'). Find out why the best fail the most, and how the 'great cloud of witnesses' in Hebrews 11 is a cumulonimbus cloud haloing a rogues' gallery. Briggs's solution to a failure of nerve―the nerve of failure―deserves wide reading." (Leonard Sweet, bestselling author; professor, Drew University, George Fox University; chief contributor to sermons.com)

"Fear of failure is a power that holds many church leaders in a death grip. In this important book, J.R. Briggs boldly speaks from his own experience and that of others, reminding us that failure is inevitable, but the crucial question is how we find grace and eventually recovery in the aftermath of failure. The gospel that we encounter in Fail is undoubtedly good news, true liberation for our fearful, weary and broken selves. May we heed its call!" (C. Christopher Smith, coauthor, Slow Church, and founding editor of The Englewood Review of Books)

"In Fail J.R. Briggs succeeds in shining a light on an often taboo subject in modern-day ministry. Through the lens of the gospel, Briggs provides a vision to see failure as an invitation to grow in the grace and knowledge of God. If you are a minister, a former pastor, a fallen pastor or a struggling believer, Fail will encourage, strengthen and instruct you in the freedom offered at the cross. For 'by his wounds, we are healed.'" (Ed Stetzer, author, Subversive Kingdom)

"J.R. Briggs has something to say to pastors about our American obsession with 'success.' He holds to the Jesus-endorsed notion that those in ministry are called to faithfulness, not success, and that sometimes faithfulness takes the peculiar form of failure. Fail dares to tell the truth and will bring much-needed clarity and comfort to a multitude of ministers who, though faithful, have drunk from the bitter cup of failure." (Brian Zahnd, pastor, Word of Life Church, St. Joseph, Missouri; author, A Farewell To Mars)

"Someone needed to write a book that would cast vision for the transformational possibilities contained within experiences of failure. J.R. Briggs has done just that! In a voice that is honest, winsome and hopeful, he offers hard-won wisdom for leaning into God's gracious purposes even in the most painful experiences leaders face. Thanks be to God!" (Ruth Haley Barton, founder of the Transforming Center and author of Strengthening the Soul of Your Leadership)

"J.R. Briggs offers a sobering look at the pain, loneliness and shame we pastors regularly face. Like the apostle Paul, he understands that the best ministry happens when we allow it to flow through our own weakness and failure. Reading this book was like 'a kiss from God on my bruises.'" (Aaron Graham, lead pastor, The District Church, Washington D.C.)

"J.R. Briggs goes beyond giving us a robust theology of failure; he opens his veins and shares his life. He calls us to be faithful not efficient, to live vulnerably without shame. He gives us grace-filled opportunities to be our true selves. If you are a pastor, you need this book!" (JR Woodward, national director of church planting for V3, author of Creating a Missional Culture)

"Fail is like a barn for a tired, overburdened mule. That mule is us: preachers, pastors, leaders in the church. The wonderful gift we are given here is a re-yoking, where we come into that barn and have our yokes removed―which are of impossible weight to carry and manage―and slip into the yoke of Jesus, who carries all the burden of ministry and lets us join him, side by side, on the journey." (Lance Ford, author of UnLeader and coauthor of The Missional Quest)

"If you are struggling in ministry, this book will be like sitting down with a good friend who knows and understands what you are enduring. No quick fixes. No pat answers. No formulas. No judgment. Just gentle wisdom laced with grace to help you continue in God's calling." (Ruth Graham, author of In Every Pew Sits a Broken Heart)

"J.R. Briggs captures the struggle of pastors in his new book Fail. The fear of failure is enough to freeze us in our path to ministry. J.R. not only shows the facts as to how this is affecting ministers across every denomination but also points toward solutions for pastors to find their way out in the midst of failure. Pastors often find themselves incapable, inadequate and even incompetent in the task that God has placed before them. J.R. reminds them that the only hope they have to complete the mission God has placed on their calling is to rely on the Holy Spirit." (Maurice Graham, executive director, Shepherd's Staff Ministry, Inc.)

"With Fail, J.R. Briggs has captured a truth we all crave but fear to articulate. There is not merely grace for the burning- or burnt-out, there is the very life of Christ: full of honesty, meaning and sharp joy. Beyond platitudes or Twitter-quote pep talks, J.R. offers peace, real encouragement, and a better definition of success for Christian ministry. This is the next best thing to sharing the body and blood with people who understand. Failures large and small, visible and invisible, will stand up and shout for J.R.'s wisdom, wit and honesty. I know that I do." (Paul Pastor, associate editor of Christianity Today's Leadership Journal and PARSE)

"God is allowing thousands of men and women to fail. Isn't that wonderful? It is if you can see it from God's perspective. I believe that God, although hurting with you through your pain and loss, is also delighted in your failure. Why? Because he wants so much more for you! J.R. Briggs will give you language for what you're going through, help you find healing where you are and provide you with some handles for the journey ahead. As a man who has experienced his share of failure, I am so glad someone finally had the courage and hopefulness to write a book like this one. You'll be glad, too!" (Kevin Coln, neighborhood lead pastor at LifeBridge Christian Church, missional-incarnational coach & consultant at Missio)

"This book is CPR. Fail has given me breath for years to come. Within, Briggs offers an engaging, appealing and learned description of the failed life, invoking his readers to see afresh the breathtaking journey of all the landmarks along the way. Briggs reminds us that half of resurrection is death. And that, to truly live, we must fail. Jesus breathed his Spirit over a group of failed disciples from his cross. That same kind of thing seems to be going on in this book." (A. J. Swoboda, PhD, professor, pastor and author of Messy)

"I think Briggs is on to something. The life of the Christian is a constant oscillation between cross and resurrection. For pastors, that back-and-forth is more fraught than for others. People cast their stuff on us, whether they hate us or worship us as heroes. We see the stories in the Bible and expect miracles, and when they don't come we settle. We end up drawing on whatever charisma we may have instead of on what we know to be true about Jesus. . . . Briggs is right to notice that the moniker loser is the most crushing epithet our clever culture has yet devised. But it's not what God wants. God wants faithfulness. There is an irony in a book on failure becoming the next 'it' book on the Christian publishing scene, just as there is to a conference called Epic Fail being marketed with QR codes. But it smells a lot more like Jesus than most of what's on offer out there." (Jason Byassee, The Christian Century, October 15, 2014)

Grace for Pastors
By Monika Plume
Although pastors regularly share the gospel with others, the culture of ministry often looks more like performance. This book ministers to ministers and reminds them that the grace they preach to others is even extended to themselves. It's great for pastors who have had an obvious failure but also for those who live in fear of failure or just feel like a failure. For me it totally redefined success in ministry and restored my hope that God could use me in this most challenging work.

A Healing Balm
By Dave Gerhart
An outstanding book that challenges the metrics by which we measure our worth and our ministries. Especially relevant to those of us that bear the scars of ministry and seek health and growth from the pain. It is encouraging, practical, insightful and filled with hope! I can't recommend highly enough!

Healing through facing heartache
By Clint Walker
I suppose I am a glutton for emotional punishment. My wife sighed when she saw me with this book. And rightfully so. I have been feeling like a failure lately. I have especially felt down about my ministry work, but because I tie so much of my self-value to how successful I am as a pastor, it cannot help but also find its way into how I feel about who I am as a father, husband, friend, and human being. I feel like their is a big "L" for loser on my forehead at this point in my life, and try as hard as I may to feel different, I struggle to overcome it.

J.R. Briggs, in his book Fail, talks about the sense of failure that many pastors experience and/or feel, and sees that sense of failure at the very least as not fatal in life or ministry, and at best perhaps fertile ground for growth as a disciple of Christ and perhaps as a minister.

Briggs discusses all sorts of failure that a minister can experience. He speaks of failure in the ministry that is the result of sin. He shares about ministry failures that are a result of a lack of wisdom, or perhaps a series of poor communication patterns between the pastor and the congregation or congregational leadership.

Perhaps, what Briggs really grabs onto that is helpful is a study about amoral ministry failure. He describes in detail how that process comes about, how it wounds the soul of the Christian leader, and healthy ways of recovering from such a failure. I found this section of the book worth the price of the entire text.

Another thing Briggs does that is helpful, however is that he describes the landscape of the modern American church and the modern pastor's ministry. Using Eugene Peterson as a foil against the modern business and success model of doing church, he then borrows statistics that speak to the scene of pastoral ministry on pages 46-47 of this text. These include:

40 percent of pastors seriously considered leaving ministry in the last three months
25 percent of pastors have been forced out or fired from their church at least once
45 percent of pastors experience depression or burnout to the point where they express a need to take a leave of absence.
70 percent of pastors report not having a single close friend
Pastors who work less than 50 hours a week are 35 percent more likely to be terminated
David Hansen put it correctly in his book The Art of Pastoring; Ministry Without All the Answers. Ministry is a journey to the cross, or at least of taking up your cross and following Jesus. It is not supposed to be easy. But, there are points when you really wonder if God wants you on his ministry team anymore. Briggs gets this. He acknowledges this sense of failure as part of ministry, and then he leads ministers, not necessary out of failure, but to a place of healing and perhaps hope. Praise the Lord.

Churchill: A Biography, by Roy Jenkins

A brilliant new life of Britain's greatest modern prime minister

Winston Churchill is an icon of modern history, but even though he was at the forefront of the political scene for almost sixty years, he might be remembered only as a minor player in the drama of British government had it not been for World War II. In this magesterial book, Roy Jenkin's unparalleled command of the political history of Britain and his own high-level experience combine in a narrative account of Churchill's astounding career that is unmatched in its shrewd insights, its unforgettable anecdotes, the clarity of its overarching themes, and the author's nuanced appreciation of his extraordinary subject.

From a very young age, Churchill believed he was destined to play a great role in the life of his nation, and he determined to prepare himself. Jenkins shows in fascinating detail how Churchill educated himself for greatness, how he worked out his livelihood (writing) as well as his professional life (politics), how he situated himself at every major site or moment in British imperial and governmental life. His parliamentary career was like no other - with its changes of allegiance (from the Conservative to the Liberal and back to the Conservative Party), its troughs and humiliations, its triumphs and peaks - and for decades almost no one besides his wife discerned the greatness to come. Jenkins effortlessly evokes the spirit of Westminster through all these decades, especially the crisis years of the late 1930s and the terrifying 1940s, when at last it was clear how vital Churchill was to the very survival of England. He evaluates Churchill's other accomplishments, his writings, with equal authority.

Exceptional in its breadth of knowledge and distinguished in its stylish wit and penetrating intelligence, this is one of the finest political biographies of our time.

Amazon.com Review
Winston Churchill was querulous, childish, self-indulgent, and difficult, writes English historian Roy Jenkins. But he was also brilliant, tenacious, and capable--in short, "the greatest human being ever to occupy 10 Downing Street." Jenkins's book stands as the best single-volume biography of Churchill in recent years.

Marked by the author's wide experience writing on British leaders such as Balfour and Gladstone and his tenure as a member of Parliament, his book adds much to the vast library of works on Churchill. While acknowledging his subject's prickly nature, Jenkins credits Churchill for, among other things, recognizing far earlier than his peers the dangers of Hitler's regime. He praises Churchill for his leadership during the war years, especially at the outset, when England stood alone and in imminent danger of defeat. He also examines Churchill's struggle to forge political consensus to meet that desperate crisis, and he sheds new light on Churchill's postwar decline. --Gregory McNamee

From Publishers Weekly
Winner of the Whitbread Prize for Gladstone (1997), Jenkins offers a bloated yet idiosyncratic and accessible life of England's greatest modern prime minister. Jenkins's wry wit and judgments of great men, untainted by awe, partly offset the fact that, as he admits, he has few new facts to add to an already exhaustively recorded life. Jenkins has a propensity for unnecessary French and curious adverbs (unfriendlily), adjectives (spistolatory) and nouns (peripherist) and is at his best exploring Churchill's three out-of-office "wilderness" periods and his writing jobs (requiring a staff of loyal, ill-paid researchers and secretaries to take his clangorous dictation), which helped support his expensive lifestyle. ("I lived in fact from mouth to hand," Churchill confessed.) But as the statesman's many decades wind down, the biographer himself seems to tire, resorting to a litany of itineraries. American audiences may be drawn to Jenkins's revisionist views of Churchill's relationships with Roosevelt, with whom he sees "more a partnership of circumstance and convenience than a friendship of individuals," and with Eisenhower, a "political general" who was "always a little cold for Churchill's taste, with the famous smile barely skin-deep." Jenkins is hard on Churchill for being soft on alleged mountebanks like Lord Beaverbrook. He dwells only briefly on Churchill's family affairs, aside from expressing skepticism about his reputedly warm marriage to Clementine; she often advised her husband wisely, but "managed to be absent at nearly all the most important moments of Churchill's life." Jenkins's judgments and the fact that he has boiled this eventful life down to a single volume will attract many readers to this entertaining, though often exasperating study. 32 pages of photos and maps not seen by PW. (Nov.)Forecast: A main selection of both BOMC and the History Book Club, with a respected author, who will tour New York and Washington, D.C., and an iconic subject, the biography is guaranteed media attention and sales.

From Library Journal
A British politician and author of over a dozen books, Jenkins (Gladstone) begins with an important question: given the extensive literature on Winston Churchill, is there anything left to add? Although Jenkins admits that he has not discovered any new factual information, this does not disqualify him from supplying useful insights into Churchill's career. As a veteran politician and administrator, Jenkins is well placed to evaluate Churchill's strengths and weaknesses as a cabinet-level official. For example, Jenkins asserts that Churchill's micro-management at the admiralty during the early months of World War I contributed to disaster, while his leadership at the Ministry of Munitions near the end of the war helped maintain a high level of production. Jenkins's coverage of World War II eschews facile generalizations and provides a detailed picture of Churchill's role as wartime leader, in particular his ability to hold things together during the period of 1940-41, when less confident men would have given up. Churchill fans will enjoy reading this book, while academics will likely stick to Norman Rose's Winston Churchill: The Unruly Giant (LJ 6/15/95). Recommended for larger libraries. Heroism in Politics
By M. A Newman
Is there any more fascinating figure than Winston Churchill? I have found him interesting since I read a children's book on him back in 1972 and continue to find him interesting to this very day. There are many books to come out on Churchill. The definative work was begun by Randolph Churchill and continued after his death by Martin Gilbert. This runs several volumes and includes lengthy extracts from Churchill's papers. There is also a one volume abrigement which Gilbert has written. Others have taken up the task of writing the life of the most significant British statesman of the 20th century and these are as a whole a mixed bag. However, despite the vast number of books Roy Jenkins book stands apart from many others.
The main reason is that Jenkins is a former British politician. When he writes about Parliament, he does so with authority as he has walked the same halls as Churchill and has held many of the same positions. Although he was Labor and Churchill Conservative/Liberal/Conservative, Jenkins is able to lay aside party rancor and write a kind of "Churchill without tears." Jenkins saw himself as a moderate member of the Labor Party and left it in the early 80s in reaction to the extremely radical views of the Michael Foot era.
The essential truths about Churchill as Jenkins sees them are personality driven. For although Churchill was a great man, many of the elements that served him well during the second World War, his tenacity, eloquence, and belief in his destiny did not always suit all environments. Traits that were useful standing up against Hitler were not as useful in planning the Dardanelles campaign. There is an object lesson here which Jenkins devotes some attention to.
Other than his book on Churchill, Jenkins has also written books on Asquith (PM during part of the First World War) and Gladstone (Prime Minister during Churchill's father's time). It probably is good that he wrote these works first as they prepared him to produce what amounts to a masterpiece of Churchillian scholarship.

A Great Political Biography
By Michael B. Crutcher
Roy Jenkins, who has combined careers both as a successful author and politician, has written a sweeping, 912 page one volume biography of Sir Winston Churchill, the "Greatest Englishman."
This begs the question, do we really need another Churchill biography? After all, we have the eight volume "official" biography, begun, with two volumes, by his son Randolph, the remaining six written by Martin Gilbert. Gilbert also produced a dutiful one volume summation. We have two volumes out of a projected three by William Manchester, unfortunately not finished because of Manchester's failing health.
But that is just to scratch the surface. There is a perceptive and competent biography by his life-long friend, Violet Bonham Carter, the diaries of his physician, Lord Moran, and the diaries of his long-time private secretary, John Colville. There is even a revisionist biography, by John Charmley. Churchill said that history would treat him kindly, because he intended to write it. This he accomplished in his six volume history of the Second World War and in autobiographical accounts of his early military exploits. After his three (eventually four) volume account of World War One was published, Arthur Balfour said, "Winston has written a great [in size] book about himself and called it 'The World Crisis.'"
Despite this, Jenkins' volume is enormously welcome. His is likely the last biography to be written by someone who knew him, or at least had met him, served with him in Parliment, and as a major political figure himself, though in a later era, understands the political and Parlimentary atmosphere in which Churchill lived. His biography is the best political appreciation of Churchill career that we are likely to get, political in the sense of understanding how Churchill rose and (often) fell in Parlimentary esteem, how Churchill operated in the cabinet and how he connected (or failed to connect) with the British electorate.
Jenkins is also not afraid to summarize the principal points of a period in Churchill's career, rather than wade through a chronological approach to political problems now too distant from us to have much meaning. He also will offer judgments on the success or failure of Churchill's policies, unlike Gilbert, who is non-judgmental in the extreme. He is perhaps too harsh on Churchill over The Dardanelles campaign of World War I, a great failure but at minimum an inventive effort to avoid more pointless casualities on the Western front. He is skillful in weaving in Churchill's various illnesses and physical declines to explain how the aging warrior became less effective in later years.
The book is extremely well written. If Jenkins is a lesser politician than his subject, he is also a better writer, the author of splendid biographies of such figures as Gladstone and Asquith. These literary gifts are matched with an encyclopedic knowledge of modern history, so that he is able to draw illuminating comparisons. Even to himself. Noting that Churchill dined often with Lloyd George when the latter was Prime Minister in the early 1920's, Jenkins notes in a footnote that as Chancellor of the Exchequer in the Wilson cabinet, apart from officials banquets he never had a meal with the Prime Minister.
I note quibbles in other reviews of this book that it is "too English," both in content and style. I would defend the author on both scores. Although there is the occasional reference that falls deaf to American ears, this is a serious biography with a significant level of detail. It does help to have read something about the man and the period as background. But to have denuded the book of this information would have made it a much poorer thing. I would also defend Jenkins' style, which is graceful if sometimes convoluted. To the reviewer who only got started on the book, I would say, go back and give it another shot. You will get used to the language and will be better for the experience. All literature should not be reduced to the level of John Grisham or Stephen King.
I think a more telling criticism is that we read the book and are enlighted, charmed, educated, but...do we ever see the "man in full"? We are tantalized with bits of information about his relationship with his wife, Clementine (why is she always vacationing separately?), but without any real explication of their marriage. There are references to his periods of depression, the "black dog," but how serious were they? Jenkins is good on Churchill as a writer, as one would expect from a fellow writer, and best on Churchill as a politician. But as fine as this biography is, I would rate Manchester's effort as getting closer to the man. There is, in Manchester's first volume, about a thirty page description (if memory serves) of "a day in the life" of Churchill, which somehow says more about Churchill the man than all of Jenkins' 912 pages. Still, Jenkins has written an extemely valuable and readable effort, the best one volume biography in my opinion, and the best we are ever likely to see of Churchill in his political role.

Humility Didn't Fit
By Michael A. Maus
Winston Churchill knew he was talented and spent his adult life proving it. This wonderful book tells the story. I would give it five stars if it weren't so long, yet the details are captivating and well worth the effort.
Jenkins, biographer of earlier British PMs (Gladstone and Asquith) and himself a former Chancellor of the Exchequer and a Member of Parliament for decades, writes with extraordinary skill. He brings Churchill to life and, in this chronological biography, brings the reader close to the person who led Britain through the darkest days of World War II.
For anyone with even a passing interest in the political life of Great Britain during the twentieth century, this is a "must read."
