About the Author

Roger Pring is a well-established author, graphic designer, and educator who hasbeen at the forefront of digital design since the early 1980s. Not Heavy on the Tech, but Informative

This is a book where you get exactly what you think it'd be based on the title. It goes into the stock filters included in modern versions of PhotoShop (CS) their variants and adjustments. Similar tools exist in filters vended by third party sellers so this book is extensible more or less to other than stock filters.

The value of this book is in its examples of how to use the rather large array of filters to enhance your work. Although I've been using PhotoShop for years now, I rarely bother with filters (aside from the common ones like Unsharp Mask) because I wasn't interested in turning my photos into a weird freak show. This book demonstrates how one may use these filters to truly enhance the photos rather than distort them in an effort to make startling an otherwise indifferent photo.

A good example of how this book can assist your productivity is the Diffuse Glow filter. This is one I never even bothered with before but I plan on experimenting with it for both landscapes and portraits - all from seeing the examples and settings of how it was used for the making of this book.

My only quibble is that the filters' tech isn't explained which may help the reader in getting more from these filters. Frex, it gives an explanation of the High Pass filter but no mention of what is passed or not passed by this filter. What is 'high' and 'low' in a photograph? What is passed or not passed then? Yes the examples show images of before and after but not the why. I would have liked some more 'why' and 'how', but that's me.

The bottom line is that in learning more about a few filters, I feel sure that I have gotten more than my money's worth from this book.

Though not all of these 10 short stories are equal in their teen appeal, those that have it are clever and surprising. "Jubilee," for example, concerns two neighbor girls home from Stanford for the summer. Parker, the oldest, is the daughter of a ranch owner, while scholarship student Andrea's father is a worker on the ranch. Andrea has a chip on her shoulder about Parker's wealth that spills over in ugly, unexpected ways. In the title story, teenage Frances rides her father's bus to the downtown fiesta but gets in over her head when she flirts with a "painter." Each of the stories is set in a rural New Mexico—a setting not often represented in fiction. Most feature characters with unrelenting hubris being forced to examine their often prejudiced attitudes toward others. The role of religion is examined in three different stories. In "The Five Wounds," Amadeo is hoping to play the role of Jesus in this year's Good Friday celebration when his foul-mouthed, pregnant teenage daughter arrives on his doorstep. In "Family Reunion," Claire goes on vacation with her Mormon neighbors, but Mormonism isn't what she thought it might be. Finally, in "Ordinary Sins," a woman works at a rectory and gets drawn into a conflict between the beloved older priest and the strict newcomer. This work offers dark and often hopeless but thoughtful portrayals of working class New Mexicans from different perspectives. Night of Great Reading

I picked Night at the Fiestas up yesterday, and read through the first 200 pages in one sitting, got up, and finished it this morning. I typically prefer novels to short stories, but I skimmed the first story, the haunting "Nemencia," at the bookstores, and was impressed by the language and the strong imagery. The best short stories, "Mojave Rats," "The Five Wounds," "Jubilee," could have gone on for another hundred pages a piece, and I would have been happily engrossed. I had heard of this book only because Amazon recommended it after I had pre-ordered Mario Vargas LLosa's book (what a compliment!), and I'm so glad her name popped up on my radar. Look forward to following her career!

A Brilliant New Writer

I first fell in love with Kirstin Valdez Quade when I read a story not included in this collection, Kidline, which won the Mississippi Review’s 2014 fiction prize. In Kidline, a lonely, superior sixth grade girl meets a blind transfer student who quickly surpasses her in popularity and social confidence. What the lonely girl ends up doing to her blind classmate is almost cartoonish in its cruelty – the kind of outrageous behavior that gives a quietly told tale a welcome jolt of adrenaline – but it only makes us care all the more deeply for the twelve year old who is just learning who she is. Kristen Valdez-Quades is an architect storyteller who built momentum in each story.

Reality TV at its Best!

I’m not a fan of Reality TV, which is why I loved this book so much, because Chloe, our heroine, isn’t fond of them either. I thought a little Reality TV bashing could be a lot of fun. And was it ever so fun in this sexy story. Some of the scrapes Chloe got into had me rolling on the floor laughing. But there was so much more here than just the laughs. The author actually turned all the Dream Girls into real people with real stories. She even had me feeling sympathy for the ones I was supposed to hate. But at the heart of it is the romance between Chloe and Dominic, and the heat they generate is off the charts.

This book is a fun and witty take on the TV series “The Bachelorette”. Alexis Alvarez kept me laughing from start to finish. At one point I was laughing so hard I had tears streaming down my face. I highly recommend Dream Girl.

Dominic Harrington is a successful businessman who has no interest starring in a reality TV show. He only agrees out of guilt due to a favor he owes his long time friend Kyle. Dominic has no plans to fall in love on the reality show called Dream Girls, but sometimes fate has other plans. Chloe Barnes is a smart, intelligent, and confident full-figured beauty and is a contestant on the show. She has her reasons for trying out and they have everything to do with travel and adventure and nothing to do with love. Chloe bumps into Dominic before shooting starts and sparks fly. They verbally attack one another as a form of foreplay. Kyle, the producer of the show, forms an instant dislike for Chloe and makes her life on the show challenging. Throughout the filming Chloe is able to rise to the occasion and overcome the roadblocks Kyle puts in her way with ingenuity and humor. The plot is outlandish, but the characters and writing are so fun it makes this book a must read. Enjoy!

A hot television realty show with a hot guy and twenty females.
Dominic is the newest hot guy on a reality show that he doesn't want to do. He was asked to do it as a favor for a friend. When he meets one of the contestants before hand he gets a shock into reality. Chloe is a real treat when it come to the other contestants. She doesn't want to demean herself or settled for what they want her to do. When Dominic's and Chloe's chemistry get involved they try hard to keep it down but it doesn't work.

As the play the game on reality tv for each other will they have a chance or will their chemistry go out before they get started.

The more I read, the more it makes sense.

Schwaller is not an easy read; you won't be burning through the pages. Lots of math which you can skip over, but Schwaller has penetrated what modern Egyptologists don't have the mental capacity to understand. This is what sets Schwaller apart from the rest; he explains to you the Pharonic mentality, the doctrine of the Anthropocosmos, and that the greatest teacher is Nature. You will also learn about the limits of our modern science and the limits of cerebral comprehension. The content can be quite dry as Schwaller does not seem to put any emphasis on entertaining while writing. Props to the translators of this text; the books are wonderfully bound and just a beautiful set to have on the coffee table. Note: Schwaller reveals nothing. As a man of the highest order, he does not explain to you the student, what you need to know. He guides you and it is only your ability to understand which will determine your comprehension of the material. This is how it was done for thousands of years, so don't expect anything to be spelled out for your in the same manner your college professor may have done for you.

I anxiously waited for the release of The Temple of Man. And, It was everything I hoped it would be and much than I dreamed. An intelligent, deeply researched, beautifully expressed, multi-dimensional gift of knowledge, art and spirituality. The Temple of Man, based upon the measure of a man, demonstrates the living process of the spiritual maturation of the Soul. The details are astounding, the stories vivid and the initiation processes are uniquely detailed. Poorly edited mess

This book contains absolutely no information on how to judge whether a particular option is over- or under-priced, or how to arrive at either a bullish or bearish outlook. The idea is that you have already come to some conclusion and then you consult the book to determine how you should play the option. That would be fine if the book did not contain numerous errors, all due to the fact that this book apparently was not proof-read. For example, if your outlook is bullish, you find the strategy for putting on a call spread, and select the type of spread you want to do. The author then copied the same instructions into the section on bear spreads, and then tried to change all the "calls" to "puts" or the "buys" to "sells." Of course, he missed many such changes, and there are multiple instances where the word "call" appears where it should read "put," and where "buy" appears when it should be "sell." If you buy this book, you will have to make your own corrections in it, or you may follow the instructions right into the poorhouse. I consider the money I spent on this book to be wasted.

The fundamentals of Option Strategy

Option Strategies is an excellent intermediate treatise on option trading. While it doesn't go deeply into option pricing and implied volatility, its focus on strategy and decision structure serves the reader well. Almost every major position type, from the basic buys and writes to the more complex, such as ratio spreads and butterflies are covered. Each position is dissected in detail, with emphasis on how to deal with adverse and positive price impacts.
In the pantheon of trading tomes, Courtney Smith's work should appeal to those looking for a sound foundation in option strategy. It is one place where a trader can look at any idea and figure out which type of play offers the best risk/reward alternatives. A solid non-technical book.
