Good introductory text

"Environmental Ethics" is a balanced and relatively complete introduction to an issue that is bound to be widely discussed in the years to come. After two introductory chapters, which discuss various approaches to moral decision making (such as utilitarian and deontological ethics), subsequent chapters include issues such as managing public lands, sustainability and responsibility to the future, anthropocentric and biocentric ethics and the inherent value of life, the land ethics, deep ecology, ecofeminism, and environmental justice and social equality.

Des Jardins, the author, writes in a lively fashion and does a creditable job of steering a middle course when discussing the many controversial issues that arise in environmental ethics. Even though this is not an anthology, Des Jardins describes in sufficient detail the ideas of various authors across the ideological spectrum (sometimes quoting them extensively) so as to provide an accurate portrayal of the various positions.

About the Author
Born in Portland, Maine, in 1928, Marjorie Weinman Sharmat dreamed of becoming a writer. Little did she know that she would be the author of more than 70 books for children of all ages. Another of her childhood dreams, that of becoming a detective, has also been realized in her most popular Nate the Great series, begun in 1972.

Many of Sharmat's books have been Literary Guild selections and chosen as Books of the Year by the Library of Congress. Several have been made into films for television, including Nate the Great Goes Undercover, winner of the Los Angeles International Children's Film Festival Award. Nate the Great Saves the King of Sweden has been named one of the New York Public Library's 100 Titles for Reading and Sharing.

Nate the Great Detective Debut

NATE THE GREAT is the first book in a wonderful series that introduces young readers to the world of mysteries, clues, and pancakes that is Nate the Great. Shortly after a big breakfast of pancakes, Nate is contacted by his friend Annie. She has a mystery for him. The picture, painted in yellow, she did of her dog Fang is missing. She wants Nate to find the picture for her. Nate leaves a note for his mother and is in hot pursuit of the clues that will let him know where the missing picture is. During the course of his investigation, Nate meets Rosamond and her four cats-Super Hex, Big Hex, Little Hex, and Plain Hex, and Annie's little brother Harry. One of them holds the secret of where the missing picture is.
Marjorie Weinman Sharmat is the author of over twenty Nate the Great adventures, including NATE THE GREAT STALKS STUPIDWEED, NATE THE GREAT AND THE BORING BEACH BAG, NATE THE GREAT AND THE HALLOWEEN HUNT, and NATE THE GREAT AND THE MUSHY VALENTINE. She has written dozens of books for young readers. She named Nate the Great after her father. Her books have been named as Children's Choice books and Junior Literary Guild selections, and been picked as Books of the Year by the Library of Congress. Nate the Great was named after the author's father.
As in every Nate the Great book she writes, Marjorie Sharmat plays fairly with young readers (ages 4-8) regarding the mystery and the clues. Her prose is tight, clean, and concise. Reading aloud to younger readers is an absolute hoot, and if the reader can manage the tough-guy private eye voice of a Mickey Spillane novel, the effect on young readers is even more mesmerizing. The illustrations by Marc Simont-the long-time artist of the Nate the Great series-complements the story very well, lending humor, clues, and vibrant color for young eyes. NATE THE GREAT is the perfect place to join the series because this book sets up all of Nate's world, from the frantic call by friends that have lost something, to the note Nate always leaves his mom on the refrigerator explaining his whereabouts, to the regulars that make up Nate's world.
The entire Nate the Great series is recommended to younger readers and parents who love reading to their children that might have tired of (or memorized!) all of the rhyming Dr. Seuss books. This series makes a great transition to leap from to Nancy Drew or the Hardy Boys later.

Hilarious children's book in verse

"Nate the Great" is, in a word, great. In Nate the Great, Marjorie W. Sharmat has created a hero for young boys. He acts very independently, walking around the neighborhood by himself, making his own pancakes, etc. but he wears his rubbers, and he *always* leaves a note for his mother. Marc Simont really comes through in his laid-back illustrations (some shaded, some in color) that reveal important points of the case, but do not force things down the readers' throats. Also, like the writer, Simont manages humor without going overboard.
As in the best children's books, the writing style is simple yet powerful, like a haiku. Although the "Nate the Great" series is written in full sentences, Sharmat has slyly created a wonderful introduction to poetry-that-doesn't-rhyme with his carefully placed line breaks and page breaks. Here is the first page of text: "My name is Nate the Great. / I am a detective. / I work alone. / Let me tell you about my last case: / I had just eaten breakfast. / It was a good breakfast."
The first book in the Nate the Great series is by far the best, because the funniest parts are in the character development that, of course, takes a back seat in later volumes. The establishing shots of and paragraphs talking about Nate, Annie, Fang, and Rosamond are absolutely hilarious. Continuity watchdogs will note Fang's slightly more menacing nature (and color change) and Annie's lost fascination for yellow in later books. Of course, kids won't notice or care.
The official reviews don't make it clear which books in the series are actually in this volume. The cover is definitely not the original cover of book 1. You might want to look into that before buying.
This series is great fun for little kids and whoever is lucky enough to be reading to them. Get all the Nate you can find!

Great Mystery Compilation for Kids!

My class of first and second graders loves when I read "Nate the Great" books aloud. This CD allows them to listen to it themselves, and follow along in the book - great for a classroom listening center. The actor who reads aloud has the perfect voice for Nate, child detective.

The only problem is that the stories and their corresponding tracks are not explained. Each story takes 3 or more tracks to complete. I had to make a chart for the kids to follow : Nate the Great Goes Undercover - tracks 1,2,3. Nate the Great and the Halloween Hunt tracks 4,5,6,7,8. etc.

TO THE STUDENTS

Each semester, as I stand up in front of a new group of business majors in my business law class I am struck by the thought that, cases and statutes aside, I know two very important things that they have yet to learn. The first is that I draw as much from them as they do from me. Their youth, enthusiasm, questions, and even the doubts a few of them hold about the relevance of law to their futures, fuel my teaching. They don't know that every time they open their minds to look at a point from a new perspective or critically question something they have taken for granted, I get a wonderful reward for the work that I do.

The other thing I know is that both teaching and learning the law are all about stories. The stories I tell provide the framework on which students will hang everything they learn about the law in my class. It is my hope that long after the facts about the specific language of the statutes have faded, they will retain that framework. Several years from now, "unintentional torts" may draw only a glimmer of recognition with business managers who learn about them as students in my class this year. However, they will likely recall the story of the woman who sued McDonalds for serving her coffee that was too hot and caused her injuries. The story sticks and gives students the hook on which to hang the concepts.

I remind myself of these two facts every time I sit down to work on writing and revising Business Law, as well. My goal is to present the law in a way that will spur students to ask questions, to go beyond rote memorization. Business law is an evolving outgrowth of its environment, and that environment keeps changing. In addition to the social, ethical, and international contexts I have incorporated in previous editions of Business Law, this fifth edition adds coverage and emphasis on the Internet and entrepreneurship as two vital catalysts to the law and a key part of its environment.

It is my wish that my commitment to these goals shines through in this labor of love, and I hope you have as much pleasure in using it as I have had in creating it for you.

Great book and used for my Business Law Class last Summer

This book is very well written and is quite straightforward, and I enjoyed reading about the real life business cases in this book. I learned a lot about business law and how it works in general and it is better than the business law book I used back at NC State during the spring of 2005. This one has more real life examples and each chapter has a real life case.

I highly recommend this book for students majoring in accounting. Business Law isn't my favorite subject, but this book definitely made it more fun! Thanks! :)

The kindle edition is faulty.

Why must you shut down every single time I open you! In comparison, dozens of other books I have read have not done this. This is my third full-time semester in school using ebooks, so I have experience of how they should open, it is driving me nuts. This book continually shuts down or never opens, something is wrong with the programming.
This said, the book reads "Okay" I think the author is getting exhausted and giving up. Sure, he will not like that response, I bet by his 10th edition a bit more uniformity will entail.

Almost like a review of my entire law school curriculum in one text book, with one difference - it has Pictures, and Clear Headings, and other Learning Aids - those dry case books in law school did not have any of that. I highly recommend this book. PS - I bought a used copy, one edition older than current, for about $20. What a steal. The law has not changed that much in 2 years.

Not all of Lisa's books are good, she tends to repeat herself. But this one is one of her best. You don't want to let it go, it takes you away in her special world, as she travels over Europe. I've read it again and again and again...
