Kannan Mani (@kantwit) is currently a Staff Architect - Oracle Solutions for VMware. Kannan has been with VMware for more than 4 years, involved in developing and architecting business critical Oracle solutions on VMware platforms, and helping customers and partners successfully virtualize Oracle on VMware vSphere platform globally. Kannan was previously Reference Architecture Specialist at NetApp, where he architected and developed Oracle solutions on NetApp Storage. Prior to NetApp, Kannan was an Architecture Specialist at Unisys, where he led Oracle Center of Excellence. Kannan is the domain expert in Oracle technologies on various platforms (Storage and Virtualization) and published numerous customer-facing technical documents on Oracle and Database technologies. Kannan has over 17 years in the IT industry experience, and his expertise includes Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC), Automatic Storage Management (ASM), clustering, customer relationship management (CRM), enterprise resource planning (ERP), business intelligence, performance and scalable enterprise architectures, benchmark and performance, technical solutions marketing and management, virtualization, and Cloud solutions. Kannan is a regular speaker at IOUG, VMworld, VMware Partner Exchange, Oracle Open World, EMC World, NetApp Insight, SNIA, and he is also an evangelist of Oracle technologies. Kannan has been recognized by Oracle as an Oracle ACE, and by VMware as CTO Ambassador and vExpert. Kannan holds a Master’s degree in Computer Applications and a Master’s degree in Business Administration focused on technology.

Don Sullivan, an Oracle Certified Master, a vExpert, and a VMware CTO Ambassador joined VMware in June of 2010 as a Systems Engineer Database Specialist and Oracle Solution Architect for the entirety of the Americas. In that capacity, he has worked with numerous customers and partners focused on the proposition of running Oracle, SQL, and other high-workload systems on vSphere. Presently, the Product Line Marketing Manager for Business Critical Applications at VMware, Don is a frequent speaker at conferences focused on databases and virtualization.�After finishing his Master’s thesis at Arizona State University in 1996, Don focused on logical database design with Sybase TxSql, and he moved to Denver to work as a contract DBA. Don subsequently worked for AT&T as a contract DBA with both Sybase and Oracle. In 1998, he joined Oracle and Oracle University and became a Senior Principal Instructor for Oracle University, focusing on server products. He taught all server-based classes for 6 years, which included all New Features classes, OPS/RAC, Backup & Recovery, Performance Tuning, SQL Tuning, Data Guard, and the Data Server Internals (DSI) classes from 7.3 through 10g. He is a co-author of the Oracle Certified Master Practicum, and he is an original Oracle Certified Master. He also co-authored a performance-tuning class text for MySQL. In 2004, he became a consultant with Oracle’s Advanced Technology Services (ATS) and spent the next 18 months involved in a number of proofs of concept (POCs) and other post-sales engagements. In 2005, Don joined Polyserve Corporation as the primary customer-facing Oracle Solution Architect. Although his role was primarily pre-sales, he was involved with all Polyserve customers who had Oracle implementations at every step of their implementation, both pre- and post-sales. In 2007, Polyserve was acquired by HP, and he stayed with HP. In that capacity, Don spent the majority of 2009 through 2013 delivering seminars and workshops to large customer groups focused on Oracle over Network File System (NFS). In 2010, Don joined VMware as a customer-facing Systems Engineer Database Specialist with both Sales and later PSO. In addition, Don is also a project manager for many projects to include cross-corporate functional stress tests. Finally, Don manages the virtualizing applications sub-track at VMworld and VMware’s series of select database workshops.

This is the go to book for anyone who has anything to do with Architecture or Administration of either a VMware Virtual Infrastructure hosting Oracle Applications & Databases OR an Oracle DBA who wants to learn about the shift in the industry for running Business Critical Databases. While the DBA learns the art of adopting the highly scalable and resilient Virtual Infrastructure, the VMware Admin/Architect knows the Do's & the Don'ts of Virtualising Transaction & Resource hungry Databases.

Apart from the tips and tricks, you also learn about handling objections, getting the required support and demystifying the FUD in the market about virtualising databases in general. This angle of the book would help consultants, pre-sales and sales professionals involved in large scale datacenter transformation & virtualization as well.

Virtualization is the next big thing in Oracle databases and there are lots of contradicting and confusing material in the web, both from technical front and marketing.. With Oracle being synonymous with database, VMWare is synonymous with virtualization. This text from Kannan and Don will help in you in understanding Oracle specific virtualization tricks.

This book is targeted someone with Oracle Database experience and helps to virtualize the databases with vSphere. If you are VMware guy looking to learn internals of VMWare, you might be disappointed. I found this book to be very helpful in the broad area of database virtualization as well as the specific concepts pertaining to Oracle running on virtualized infrastructure.
Virtualization was a pretty new concept at the company I work for and almost every time that I was confused about a concept or having a problem, this is the book that I reach for. I have spoken with many people over the past few years who thought they understood these concepts but in reality they did not. With this book I have been able to develop a thorough understanding of VSphere and how it is the perfect platform for Oracle. I was particularly impressed with the chapter(12) that covered case studies as sometimes it helps to know what other successful companies have done. I have been an Oracle DBA for 20 years and now I feel comfortable with virtualizing my entire Oracle footprint.

This book was published by McGraw Hill in 1980. It has chapters on pipe sizing, air ducts, lighting, sanitary systems, heat transmission, solar energy, and others.
It has fully documented hand calculator programs that the user can enter into a programmable hand or simulated HP computer calculator (several are now available). Works with HP scientific calculators. Shows all formulas and how to apply them. You can even rewrite the models in Basic.

Most all of the programs still apply - the laws of physics and engineering have not changed. Have often thought that reproducing these as spreadsheets would be a nice "second edition." Daryanani knew his stuff, and was a great engineer.

it works good for a high school student

The item is at it's presented - compact, paperback, small print. All in all, it works good for a high school student. The problem for us comes in the actual printing where a block of pages is missing (pages 249 - 312) but good news, pages 313-376 are in there twice. I'd love to find a way to contact the publisher and request a replacement - only we found the mistake after the return deadline had passed.

I can handle the size, print and even paper quality, but this is a pretty big mistake - not sure how many more we'll come across

Great value, ultra-portable

It's inexpensive. Physically it's light, small. Perfect for throwing down in a backpack. People with poor vision will want to go for something larger, but most of the market for this size of a dictionary is probably college students, and they typically won't mind having smaller text size-small price for not having to lug around another massive book.

Content wise I'm sure it's missing a lot of words, you can only cram so much in a book this size. That hasn't really come up for me, but if you can't find a word you can do a web search or go grab a bigger dictionary. The main point of something like this is it can always be right there with you-Phones die, some classes and libraries frown on them or you don't get service-Other dictionaries are just too big and you don't want to keep it with you.

As far as definitions go, I LOVE LOVE LOVE the American Heritage Dictionary. So many times when a question arises about usage of words and we pull out a dictionary to discuss, my usage is not properly covered. Then I go to the AHD, and sure enough, they've got my back! I don't know if it is a regional thing (I'm from the midwest-live in chicago, a lot of Iowans in my family), if other areas of the country/world don't accept the way we use words here, or just an oversight, but the AHD is the only choice for a dictionary for me!

You're either going to love it or hate it.

If this is going to be your only dictionary to have around the house, won't have to travel with it, has to be all-inclusive/easy to read-THIS IS NOT THE DICTIONARY FOR YOU. Get something bigger.

If you need something ultra light and portable that you can keep with you as the first place to go, this is a fantastic choice.

dictionary with extras

What can you say about a dictionary. They are not all created equal. I like this one and use it as my primary dictionary because of all the interesting information about the word that is included. I have a paper version and an ipad app. I just the app and enjoy the audio pronunciation. Searching for words is easy with the app.
Bottom liine is that of all the dictionaries out there I prefer this one for clarity, depth if infomration, synonyms, antonyms and number of words covered.

Everybody has a war story ... this is the story of one man's descent into a world from which few return unscathed

Richie was getting very good at copping a fix now, but if he didn't his body would kick back. His stomach would churn and the diarrhea would shoot out of him like the magma spewing out from a volcano. If he got a "hot shot" it wouldn't really matter because he'd be deader than Kelsey's nuts, but when you're dead you really don't care. What he did worry about was getting "cotton shot rush." If a minuscule piece of bacteria laden cotton fiber he used to filter impurities out of his heroin got loose and entered his bloodstream . . . well, let's just say the pain and agony were indescribable. He still would "roll the dice about a dozen times a day." Richard Farrell was beyond caring.

Once upon a time Richie was just a normal kid from "The Acre" in Lowell, Massachusetts. He, his brother and parents lived this fairy tale existence in a nice house they eventually moved to. They were on the right side of the tracks, but that was all a fa�ade. He'd been born a "cripple" and his father would push him mercilessly. He was going to be a football star and play for Notre Dame. His recurrent memories of abuse haunted him later in life. "Zebra stripes" didn't show and no one would ever know about the time his father lashed him to the chair with duct tape. He struggled to breathe as the tape went over his nose and mouth. The sound of his mother's "new, double-blade, electric carving knife" began to buzz and urine began to trickle down his leg. What goes on in this house, stays in this house. It was all part of growing up, or was it?

The knee was shattered in a game and drug addiction soon followed. A little taste of Dr. Feelgood later caused him to wonder how he could even "survive one minute on the streets without heroin leading [him]." Once living on the streets, he continued to garner a small amount of respect by spinning his lie about playing for Notre Dame. Over and over his memories haunted him. "I could have saved my father's life that night on the kitchen floor. But instead I watched him die." He had to get a fix within ten minutes of rising. Enough was enough. He'd been to Lowell Detox so many times. It was time to get a hot shot with Nick and Joey. He inserted the needle and squeezed the plunger. "Shake down the thunder from the sky . . . "

I hit a point in this book that disgusted me so badly I had to shut it. The disgust was not directed at Richie, but rather the attitude of those around him. Perhaps it was my own blas� attitude and inability to understand the problems people have working with those who are coping with extreme drug abuse. I kept on reading and like Joni Mitchell, "I've looked at clouds from both sides now." This is the best book I've read in some time and now, dear Richard, I'm waiting for a sequel. Thank you for helping us understand that "everybody has a war story."

Rich Farrell's Crowning Accomplishment

"What's Left of Us" is a crowning achievement; a stunning revelation of a brilliant life almost permanently interrupted. This is a crowning accomplishment by one of the best author/journalists in America today. This is a fulfillment of themes Rich Farrell has previously explored in his award-winning HBO documentary. This story, however, is a first-person account of extreme heroin addiction, culminating in an inches-to-death experience and the road to redemption. It's a stunning narrative, and a mesmerizing read. Readers beware, however; renowned crime historian T. J. English's assertion that this book is "blunt and honest..." is an enormous understatement. This book is brutally blunt and honest. Rich Farrell's story couldn't be told as effectively any other way.

This is not a darkly funny memoir in the Augesten Burroughs vein. It's unconditionally serious. Its details are often very graphic, and potentially disturbing to anyone who has led a relatively normal and stable life. Farrell as his own central character seeks to be neither likable nor admirable, but merely understood.

This is a brilliant chronicle of events that occurred in Lowell, MA, during the month of March 1987, including an exhaustive description of seven days constituting Farrell's fifth and final stay at Lowell Detox center. Unlike the first four, the last one was not voluntary. Similar to Farrell's "A Criminal and an Irishman," "What's Left of Us" is remarkable for the way it presents non-Lowell residents with an accessible portrait in words of what areas as diverse as the Acre and Belvidere were like to live in during the period addressed in the book, and brings it home to the reader in a way that makes the nature of their landscape and culture fully graspable. You feel as if you are there in Lowell, MA, during these years.

Rich Farrell's astonishing wordsmith capacity is demonstrated in the descriptive narrative recounting his day-to-day final experience at Lowell Detox. Few readers will find anything glamorous about it or most of the people chronicled within. No one would be likely to want to share the same experience. Yet his interaction with both the menial and professional staff there--and in particular that with the center's psychiatrist--are crucial to understanding how Farrell eventually dealt with his past inner demons, and how he's managed to stay straight now for over two decades. It makes this book, in my estimation, required reading for anyone contemplating a career in any aspect of the mental health or human services professions.

By way of full discourse, I know and greatly admire both Rich Farrell and his wonderful mom, Margaret. I've worked with both of them. I've often referred to Rich as Brother Farrell, or, alternatively, Brother Fearghal. It all comes to his Gaelic gift of prose and storytelling, whether whimsical or, in the case of "What's Left of Us," tragic. His talent is innate and immense. Rich refers to himself as being a "cripple" in this book, and I can assert that he does indeed walk with a pronounced limp, but in a way that is forward and confident in manner. I'd be willing to sacrifice an arm for even a tenth of Rich's talent and charisma. Oh, and is he charismatic. Very charismatic! This undeniable factor about Rich's identity comes through in this book, even when he is at the lowest ebb in his life. Attain this book and read the most extraordinary truthful account of a life that's ever been published. I've never been prouder of someone I know, and never more confident, to a metaphysical and moral certitude, of an endorsement for a written work as I am this one.

5 Glowing Stars for Broken Bonds

First I highly recommend reading Consensual (Club Imperial Book 1) before reading Broken Bonds. Book 2 picks up where Book 1 left off and there are quite a few things explained during the first book.

Broken Bonds is the continuation of the romantic and BDSM relationship between Nathaniel and Emmy. Emmy wakes up in the hospital after her brutal attack but she can’t remember the attack because of a blow to her head. What we do know is someone is out to destroy Nathaniel’s company along with Emmy herself. Emmy has many obstacles to try to overcome from her horrific few years under her stepfather’s brutal thumb. We finally learn the extent of the damage he caused her and why she turned to the BDSM lifestyle and became a Domme.

Nathaniel’s purpose in life is to love Emmy and do his best to keep her protected. He wants to get revenge on the people that have hurt Emmy, his brother Victor, and his business. Nathaniel knows one of Emmy’s attackers was his brother’s ex, Greg. But the second attacker is still a mystery because he was able to get away. Nathaniel isn’t a natural submissive but he does enjoy “playtime” with his Domme. He shows Emmy what true love is and helps break those bonds that tie her down.

I enjoyed this series so much. I loved the dual POV’s and it was a wonderful change to have the female Domme and male submissive. Nathaniel had his issues in the beginning wondering if what he felt when they were together was “right”. His head was telling him he shouldn’t enjoy this lifestyle but his body completely disagrees. I loved seeing his and Emmy’s relationship grow and change throughout the series.

This series had some hot, kinky scenes mixed in with some sweet, romantic moments, along with a little bit of mystery and suspense. By the end, you really wanted Emmy to be able to let go of her past and open up and let Nathaniel know who she truly is and why. There is a wonderful HEA, where everyone got what they deserved. I highly recommend reading this series.

When does book three come out?!

Book one left us with a cliffhanger and book two answers them and more. This book is so good and well written. Katherine has struck gold with this series. Her characters are well developed, they seem real, like old friends (and new!) that you want to learn more about. The scenes we love to read are so well written and aren't uncomfortable. It's like your best girlfriend is telling you about the hot nights she had with her man. The book also has the right amount of suspense and drama to keep it interesting when you aren't reading the "hot scenes".
I can't wait to read book three and beyond! Keep them coming Katherine!

Got it, read it, fixing to read it again.

Absolutely thrilled with this sequel. There were plenty of the "ahem" scenes we were all expecting (admit it, hoping for) and some really excellent twists, things I totally didn't expect. I really am going to read it again, straightaway. One thing that stands out to me: I think it's really hard to write dialogue and have it not come out sounding stilted and fake. Ms. Rhodes does a really wonderful job with dialogue and conversations in all the different voices, conveying many complexities of character. Looking forward to more from this author.
