Unraveling an Ancient Text with Great Benefit

Almost everyone with a general or humanities education will have heard of the Oedipus complex. Not many, however, will know much about the ancient origin of the expression. Here’s an excellent opportunity to expand and enrich one’s understanding. Even though this text is intended specifically for the classroom, it provides a lot of information to round out a general education, and does so using excellent organization and clarity in its presentation.
The full text of Oedipus Rex by Sophocles is presented here, but in contemporary English vocabulary and syntax rather than the more common and now-arcane, sub-Shakespearean formulations usually found in works on the ancient Greek dramas. This is, indeed, a fresh and meritorious feature. The author adds several other features that enhance the reader’s experience. These include: general information about the Greek theater, Oedipus Rex as the first detective story, the myth of Oedipus, the Greek conception of tragedy and its similarity to the Titanic movie, and more.
